Ive got a Silvertone P bass knockoff that I am currently repainting. ( Was Black. going to be White, with dark green pickguard) My question is; on the headstock there is a bolt I assume is to add tension to the D and G strings. Is this necessary? Can I leave it off, or should I replace it? I dont remember seeing this on any other basses. Any advice appreciated. Thanks all.

I think you are referring to a string tree. They are placed on headstocks with a straight line from the neck (no angle) in order to keep the strings from slipping out of the nut. You might be all right without it, but it was put there for a reason, so I would keep it there.
