I bought the mxr pedal mostly for the noise gate because I'm always having feedback issues. I really don't like the tone though actually. Would the noise gate work for another overdrive pedal if I used both of them and just turned the gain all the way down on the mxr or whatever?

This seems like a no-brainer. Buy an actual noise gate.

And well yes, I'll enjoy the carpal tunnel and tendonitis, because trying to get one is clearly smarter than any word you have spoken thus far.
