Let's Not The Present Taunt (Antiquated Romanticism)

I can only miss who you were
For I don't know you anymore
A picture of a past forgotten
A wilted rose upon a coffin

Should our paths perchance cross
And our glances ill-fated meet
Treat me as you would a ghoul
A dingy revenant of the street
For you, old love, I'll do the same
And let the past stay in its crypt
Nostalgia feeds new illusions
We needn't each other a fledgling tryst

To see you and your silken hair
That a stranger rests beside
Would render me a shaven Samson
Fractured by the stark divide
Between the known past and present -
A mystery too grim to tell -
The truth of your triumphant glory
At the hand of my death knell

So let's keep each other in a stasis
Our golden days in sepia tone
Give not the present an exegesis
The rotten spoils of life alone
Or with new lovers beyond compare
Let our imaginations drift
To who and what we were together
And not reality's rift

I may put you on a pedestal
But I know you do the same
Though we left before the altar
With immaturity to blame
Enshrined in memory, vivid
We have each other's hearts to haunt
You have my ring; I wear your shadow
But let's not the present taunt
I am a fake mountain.

Well, you keep putting up the goods.
It's stuff like this that models great writing.

To see you and your silken hair
That a stranger rests beside
Would render me a shaven Samson
Fractured by the stark divide
Between the known past and present -
A mystery too grim to tell -
The truth of your triumphant glory
At the hand of my death knell
