yeah, yeah bands and artists section etc. i'd like to get some answers from people who aren't straight up metalheads and are gonna give me shit for not listening to real metal, i hope that's enough of a reason to post this here

i understand that answers like 'because they're shit' and 'because metal is horrible' are inevitable but im asking because to me, they seem like a fairly accessible metal band which has definitely shown that they are capable of writing some bangers, provided that you are into the general style of rock music.

shitposts are welcome but if you have some genuine thoughts about the cultural or social reasons behind it

Nobody outside of neckbeard metalheads (read: unemployed) and UG are wringing their hands over the commercialism of Metallica. They made some hits, have a place in pop music history, and I'm sure they put on a decent show.

...modes and scales are still useless.

in a way i can see that but the problem is because i assume the counterpoint of that arguments are most other metal bands i've experienced

where metallica might feel generic and stale lyrically, i find most other bands just trying really fucking hard to be the opposite but failing miserabily in my eyes. which might put metallica higher in my book.

metallica used sound effects and film footage to get their point across. many other bands use growling and words that sound big and scary to them. at first glance one is the mark of film makers while the other is the mark of children playing pretend.

obviously this is stretching the comparison in metallica's favour so much that it's nearly in bad taste, but if staleness and lack of depth is the problem, im inclined to just accept the 'metal is shit' argument and give metallica the admitedly somewhat vain credit of selling a fuckton of albums

I love them a lot, but I can see why some people wouldn't like them musically. It's not like their lyrics are always the most personal ever, especially in recent efforts. I like their personal and more human lyrics much better, like Master of Puppets, One, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and the like. I had to listen to Hardwired the first time in two sessions because the relentless mythological/grandiose/distant lyrics got a little grating for me on the first go. I did enjoy the album though.

Of course lots of people online also hate them without even listening to them simply because it's 'cool' to hate the mainstream, post-Black Album Metallica on the internet, because people who listen to 'trve brvtal kvlt' metal tell them it's uncool to like 'new' Metallica.

That said, any band that's big enough will get a lot of hate on the internet. There's more love than hate for Metallica online, as far as I've seen.

If you're talking about the articles section on this site, they hate everything.
All it takes is one person to start saying it and a lot of them just join in.
About a year ago, Dave Grohl was God as far as they were all concerned but now he's a dick for some reason.
As for Metallica, I'm pretty sure the whole napster thing got a lot of young people on the hate train and it just grew from there.
I like them and have listened to them since I was about ten, so I don't really pay attention to the hate.
Lars is actually really sound. I met them last year and he took the time to talk to everyone and joke around.
So I dunno really, maybe their style and sound is too old and slow for younger people, or maybe they just need new amps

When Metallica released Kill em all, a month earlier Motorhead released their 6th album.  83 was a huge year and pretty much every band worth talking about had a release.  Honorable mention, Satan released Court in the Act in 83.

Point being, it's a tough crowd to walk into.  They made waves, sold some records, and did pretty good.  People like to hate on Metallica because of the Napster thing, but if we're being honest they were losing fans by the Black Album.  Metallica was a sort of testing child (among some other bands - Guns and Roses comes to mind), where studio executives were trying the 'more time in the studio' vs 'more time on tour' method.  Early Metallica owed its popularity to heaviness.  Was Kill em all good, sure, was it surprisingly good considering that rock and metal environment that year? no.  But it was fucking heavy and that made people love it.  Basically, they were cornered into a high-production atmosphere based on a bad call from executives who pinned their success on record sales and marketed them to a population that was increasingly questioning record label interference.

That said, the whole napster thing didn't help either.  And lets be honest, at the time that happened the majority of new Metallica fans were teenage and early 20's men who thought downloading was awesome.  When the scandal began, they ostracized a huge portion of their fan base.  It also doesn't help that they don't know how to shut up.  Willingly participating in radio and tv interviews and presenting unpopular opinions, let alone, putting your very not metal feelings and emotions on public display in documentaries only helped solidify them as a washed up, non-metal god band.  If they'd shut up and taken a different path and left their label when they were being pressured the Metallica story would have been a hell of a lot different.

For the most part, it's because it's trendy to shit on successful and highly influential bands.

I do like Metallica a lot and I probably always will. Even if someone does dislike them, I think some respect is due for the fact that there is about a 90% chance that their favorite metal band wouldn't be playing what they play if Metallica never existed.

It's because they're successful and loved worldwide. When an act gets that big, no one really needs to say how good they are- it's already common knowledge. As a result, all you hear is people bashing it. These bashers then outrage fans so it gets circulated.

I think it's just a matter of large numbers.

The more popular you are, the more people you reach, the more people you might reach who aren't that into you, the more people you might reach who are the kind of people who would go out of their way to complain about the things they don't like, the more people you might reach who don't really care either way but just want something to complain about

The problem with Metallica is that the accountants and marketers and managers got to them too early and tried to do to them what Kiss had done to themselves. This pushed away their original crowd so when what they were doing went out of fashion they didn't have a core audience to rely on. This then meant they had to chase trends and try and do what newer bands were doing and caused a feeling that there was a lack of authenticity there. They were already irrelevant by the time they sued Napster.

As has been correctly stated above, douchebags and hipsters alike tend to hate anything that has gotten too popular.  Metallica is the most commercially successful band in metal of all time.  That alone is enough for said idiots to hate on them.  It's the same thing with Cannibal Corpse, but on a smaller scale.  They're pretty much the most commercially successful death metal band of all time, and for that, they're hated.  However, they can play any of their naysayers under the table, as can Metallica.

My thoughts on Metallica?  They got me into metal back in the 80s.  Without them, I don't know what I'd be listening to or playing right now.  They were the gateway drug for me to get into the broader category of metal, and for that, they will never lose my respect.  I saw them once on one of their first shows of the Death Magnetic tour.  Honestly, I wasn't expecting that much out of them, as they were already kind of getting old even back then.  Well, they proceeded to play nearly ALL of AJFA's songs, most of Ride the Lightning, and the best of Master of Puppets.  They fucking NAILED every riff and every lick.  They probably played those songs better than they did back in the 80s, in fact.  Fucking blown away, I tell you.  Their level of professionalism on the stage would put most bands to shame.

The Load albums and St. Anger weren't my thing, but there were some great songs in there, especially in the former.  DM had some decent stuff; haven't yet listened to their newest.  In any case, their first four albums are undeniable masterpieces -- and NO BAND can continue to produce excellency for 30+ years without a few hangups here and there.  Maybe it's time for them to retire, but you've kinda got to respect them for sticking it out for this long.

Eh, just not my favorite. I really like RTL but honestly I don't MOP or AJFA. After that certain tunes were cool, no whole album was great to me.

I tend to not care about band personalities. I figure there's a good chance I wouldn't get along with many of the members of my favorite bands.

I love Metallica. They got me into thrash metal which showed me Megadeth Slayer and even some much less known thrash bands. The first four albums are masterpieces. I like a few songs from their last two albums but i dont listen to any of their albums from the 90s or early 00s.

People hate on them for leaving their thrash style on the black album onwards. I just dont listen to it or acknowledge people who can only name enter sandman and fuel are "true" metallica fans. But like its been said before 50 times on this thread, theyre popular so "trve metalheads" automatically call anything theyve ever done as pop.
