iPod was worth owning. Still is.

iPhone is like the cocaine of phones. Expensive as fuck for getting very little that doesn't last long and burns holes in you after.

However they do have quality sound engineering, so even these phones kick a lot of ass if you want to listen to music. Still I'd get an iPod instead.

The price is questionable, especially due to the fact that a $999 phone costs £999 in the UK, don't know how that works

The iPhone 8 is just a better 7 which is fairplay seen as its the same price as the 7 last year

The X looks amazing but will have to try it to have any faith that the face recognition is reliable, the fingerprint unlock works perfectly fine and is still super fast. Still not sure how to justify it being £999 though

Import duties, local tax and perceived value. Like every other product in the world that is available internationally.

Without forgetting that they still exploit Chinese students to make the phones cause apparently everyone forgot about that. The docu on that alone made me want to never, ever buy an apple product, even though i know other companies exploit people somewhere in the chain too

Sadly there are people who have burned up all of there paid vacation time from work to camp out for a week outside of an Apple store.

I dislike Apple in general, but on the topic of the new insanely expensive phones - I've got the galaxy s5 and been thinking about getting something a little more recent. I could afford the s8, but I just can't justify spending $700+ on a new phone. You can build a pretty kickass gaming rig for that kind of money. I guess if it's like your primary computing device, for watching movies, gaming, etc. then it might somewhat makes sense, but honestly I just use my phone for looking up things, listening to music, podcasts, making quick notes, the alarm clock, calculator, very occasionally watching youtube if there's no PC around, that kind of stuff (oh, and texts and calls). The only thing I want a better phone for would be stuff like UI improvements and a better fingerprint reader, and those aren't worth $700+ to me. Sure a better processor, ram, and such would be nice to have, but only for the sake of things being a little snappier. I don't really do anything with my phone that requires a lot of power.

Just buy the s7 instead of the s8 - if you go a generation behind you save a ton of $. The s7 is perfect in every respect- it's a fantastic phone.

Eh, if it wasn't for the fact that smartphones can take half-decent pictures and send them easily by whatsapp or whatever, or the fact that my life is being more and more forced to revolve around e-mails, I wouldn't even bother with them.

Still using a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 but I'd be happy to use my ancient Sony Ericsson phone.

Nope.

And the people that complain about this aren't portable headphoning properly. Outboard DACs and amps!

I have portable $300 bluetooth headphones that came free with my phone - the annoyance of having to charge them regularly is enough to not bother using them versus my $30 pair of wired Sony headphones most of the time.

You could buy a really nice guitar or amp for that... and I have seen a Kemper as low as 1,300 used.
You could also buy Ik multimedia amplitube max (which includes the Mesa Pack, Engl, Soldano , 5150 & Orange just to name a few) and 2  12" EV ZLX 12P  powered monitors new. That's a 1000 Watts each...BOOM!

There are BT headphones with fantastic battery life for not much more. I'm currently testing a pair that clocks 30 hours with noise cancelling on a 2.5 hour charge. Real world listening, not 'marketing hours.'

But I'm not talking about Bluetooth. I am a cabled headphone guy, but smartphones, as they stand, are generally shite for audio. Lightning connection to outboard amp/DAC, which the headphones are then plugged into is much, much better.

LOL I never could wrap my head around people pitching tents in front of the Apple stores and camping for a week just to be sure they get the newiPhone on launch day, When I was young and not employed I remember standing in line ouside of a record store for maybe 45 minutes for the midnight release of a new album but I was young and we ran around at night anyway but to camp for a week outside of a phone store boggles my mind these people have to be using their vacation days to do that.

You can very feasibly do it for less than $300 with your existing headphones.

EDIT: Actually, looking at the pricing of some of the newer FiiO portable amps/DACs, Sub $300 with headphones, and it'd be a damn good upgrade.

Im not buying a fucking DAC to listen to trap on my phone. Thats insane. Its a phone.

Samsung and sonys have decent dacs in them these days

also when you get on audiophile level (like I do) you'll likely have a portable amp/dac from fiio or something that will take over internal dac via usb. they generally work on both iphone and android. apparently iphone music apps leave a lot to be desire when it comes to hi res audio and features, and non of them are free while there some great alternatives to stock app on android (I paid for poweramp though)

however, iphones have no sd card slot so you're reliant on internal memory (which they charge way too much for a small gigabyte increase) or streaming (which is fine and is in decent quality these days but is limiting) and if you are running higher bit rate files, that internal memory quickly runs out, especially if running flac, (though I just stick to 320kbps/v.0 myself)

I only ever really upgrade now when my current phone has become a bit unusable for listening to music. I currently have a sony xperia x5 purely because the samsung at the time removed the sd card slot and the newer one with the slot back in wouldn't support the card size I wanted to use. Thinking for my next phone (the xperia looks like it's going to fall apart after 2 yrs now) I'll try and avoid the "top of range" phone if I can find a lower tier model that still fits my audio playing requirements.

oh and on ipods, sure they looked great back in the day, despite having to put up with itunes bullcrap but I checked what apple is pushing right now "ipod touch" which is just pretty much a weak smart phone and for the prices they offer the 32gb for example (£199), you could buy a 200gb micro sd and have enough left over to get a nice portable amp/dac from fiio.

edit: apparently there are 400gb micro sd cards out now, amazon has one for £230. not sure if any current phone is compatible for it yet though lol (lsat I heard phones were just up to 200gb) I have 128gb right now that is about 2/3rds full, so I'm a long way from needing a 400gb.
O.K.

Also iPod classic still rules. iTunes got okay to use but now Apple are ruining it again.

me? it's just 320kbps for nearly everything and the odd variable file in v.0 (pretty much identical to 320 in practice but a bit smaller). that comes up to 90gb out of 128gb card space with my current listening collection (I'll listen to every artist on there at least once over the course of a year)

can you even get a ipod classic still though (new, not used/refurb/)? even if you track down one in good shape to use, it's still that annoyance of carrying two devices around. I've always been music on phone guy since that orange/white sony erricson phone back in the day (before then it was minidiscs and before that cd & tape players)

I remember for xmas I wanted to get my mother a shuffle (she refuses to get a smartphone) since she kept borrowing my sisters but couldn't find I shit so got her a sandisk clip and she likes it a whole bunch more than the shuffle (plus it has sd card slot if she gets through that 8gb quick)
O.K.
