Just want to now what you guys think on what the best hippy songs would be, you know the songs from the late 60's to early 70's. One example to get this going is Turn Turn Turn by The Byrds

The Byrds are a great band. Usually when I think of "hippies" I tend to think more of people protesting.

While it's not one of the greatest songs ever, I think that I-Feel-Like-I'm-A-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag by Country Joe McDonald is a great hippy song. Also a lot of stuff by the Mamas and the Papas fits the hippy category too.

Uh... I don't really tend to picture the Dead as being hippies oddly enough, though.

The trouble with saying "hippie songs" is that there are so many different styles and bands that could be classified as hippy-ish: you've got late Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, the Byrds, Ten Years After, CCR, the Doors... the list goes on!

As far as a song that best personifies the hippie culture and lifestyle goes, I'd definitely go with Times They Are A-Changin', even though it was released a bit before the rise of the hippie sub-culture.

The End, though, is an excellent song to describe the depravity and downer-ethos of the - ahem - end of the golden age of hippies.

Hippies and old black men make the best music, no doubt about it.
Peace, peace, and that's my piece.

Ten Years After F**king rules!

Damn right! Ten Years After!!!!!!! - I'd Love to Change the World - This song is in the top 10 hippy songs!

A few others for consideration:
Revolution by The Beatles for its political theme.

White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane and Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath for their "recreational pharmaceuticals" promotion .

War Pigs by Black Sabbath for its anti-war messages.

Signs by 5 Man Electric Band and Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire for their social commentary.
