Hmmm...I don't have a lot of opinion on this as I don't think a band needs a stellar guitarist to be great, but here are 5 of the best off the top of my head...not really in order (after all, this is art not science):

Doug Martsch
Ted Leo
Jack White
Johnny Greenwood
Billy Corgan

Hmm, yeah, that seems about right...came out better than I thought.
#4
Actually, I just realized I should have put somebody from the Wrens in there, but I wouldn't know which one because they're both so good. Please see them in concert if you have a chance!

johnny greenwood
graham coxon
matt bellamy
jack white

Kelly Jones

Noel Gallagher

So...

Noel Gallagher - Oasis
Billy Corgan - Smashing Pumpkins
Graham Coxon - Blur
Matt Bellamy - Muse
Crispian Mills - Kula Shaker

I'd also like to say Jonny Greenwood and Jack White too, because they're great.

Why is Noel Gallagher such a funny choice to you? Still can't argue with greenwood and coxon, i would have put squire there but it says five.

you put

McCabe, Coxon, Greenwood, Marr and Squire in a room with Noel - they'll all just out play him till he ends up startin a fight with someone... Noel Gallagher can only play the minor pentatonic scale... thats almost all oasis guitar solos are based around... u cant put noel gallagher in a list with those other five... it's just wrong
#27
Glad to see Greenwood and Marr getting a lot of mentions. Mine are...

Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
Johnny Marr (The Smiths)
Peter Buck (REM)
Ant Theaker/Mike Hibbert (Hope of the States)
Graham Coxon (Blur)

I can....and choose to

Someone mentioned Jeff Buckley, and I'd like to add him to my list, which makes about 7 or 8 so far

He's fantastic.

My top 5 current guitarists(that is to say that are somewhat new)

1. Matthew Friederberger from the Fiery Furnaces - he has a nice, fresh sound that I really enjoy plus the solo on Inspector Blanchflower is one of the best ever.
2. M. Ward - i'm a little partial to folk guitarists so I really like this guy.
3. Jeff Tweedy - i really like his rhythms, very catchy and it looked like he was outplaying Cline when I went to see them in concert.
4. Win Butler - another good guitarist that doesn't have to play ridiculously complicated leads, he just plays original stuff.
5. the guy from Les Savy Fav - unconventional and badass; sounds a little like the guitars of Fugazi.
#32
Mine:
1.Rogers Stevens-Blind Melon
2.Christopher Thorn-Blind Melon
3.Dave Keuning-Killers
4.Noel Gallagher-Oasis
5.Johnny Greenwood=Radiohead

Just saw them play last weekend. He's still amazing now. Haha, but he looked kind of like an indian chieftain with this long grey hair and shirt with an bald eagle on it.

The mental image I get from that is hilarious.

Johnny Marr was a phenominal rythym player. And Squire put more good hooks into The Stone Roses' S/T then all the hooks (ripped off of course) in all 8 LZ albums combined. Noel Gallagher is really good too. I don't really mind that all Oasis solos sound the same. Anyone who writes the guitar parts to Acquiesce and Headshrinker is awseome in my book. So I guess my list would look like this:

1.Johnny Marr
2.Noel Gallagher
3.John Squire
4.Billy Corgan/James Iha
5.Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo

Nick Valensi is not the lead guitarist for the Strokes since they don't have a strictly "lead" guitarist. They trade off lead lines, though I do think Nick is more talented than Albert.

My top 5 "indie" guitarists:
1. Marr
2. Greenwood
3. Joey Santiago - Pixies
4. Jack White
5. Jerry Harrison - Talking Heads

The amount of scales you use does not affect your status as a good/crap guitarist. It's what you do with them. Also, being a good guitarist isn't all about amazing solos, it can also be about clever riffs, and songwriting. The latter being a field in which Noel could do far better than your 5 listed guitarists. He uses some damn clever chord progressions.

Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins)

in the words of Vicky Pollard "OH MY GOD I SOOOOOOO CANT BELEIVE U JUST SAID THAT"

so let me understand you are trying to Say Noel Gallagher can write songs better than John Squire? you must be having a laugh - even noel's finest hour The Masterplan probably the best lyrics he's wrote... or Morning Glory - doesn't compare to Made of Stone, Waterfall, Mersey Paradise, even I Wanna Be Adored

and were you insinuating that Noel gallagher can come up with better riffs than Graham Coxon???????????

or he can use his guitar more inventively than JONNY GREEWOOD or NICK MCCABE???

Noel Gallagher has said himself he wanted to Johnny Marr so i'll leave that...
