I searched the forum and no "Shawn Lane" thread came up, so Ill start one. He is, in my opinion, the most soulful shredder, and probably one of the fastest and most unique. His use of displaced rythms makes for very exotic music, and his musica always has an uplifting approach. Any comments from you?

I dont really see him as a shredder - but i love him, personally. I also like that he doesnt have depressing songs, or songs that are heavy for the sake of it.

Sometimes i feel that he overplays a little, especially on ballads, but its usually well timed and appropriate.

Anyone got particular fave songs? Hardcase and GPF for me.

And have you guys joined up at www.lanesblitz.com? Why settle for a SL thread when you can have a SL FORUM? The guys there will love you!

Yes, Ive seen Power Solos, thats where I learned about displacing rythms, and I am currently a member at Lane Blitz. My favorite songs are mostly ones with Jonas Hellborg, but outside that, GPF for sure. Learning it right now.

Damn you're lucky...

I love the music I've heard from him. I think that, for the sake of spreading his great music to the masses, Vai should buy the rights to his stuff and re-issue it, because who can afford $50 for PoT? (pun not intended)

Lane is really good, and really knows how to use his skill. But I wouldn't say he's the most soulful. I'd say Vai, Satch, Friedman, and Becker own the rest on that level. But he could shred their asses into oblivion with no problem. I really like some of his runs, they're kind of hard to explain because they're so technical and exotic sounding. His music just makes you go like I really like him, he's just so easygoing about his playing. He seems to have so much fun while he's jamming.

Shawn Lane is like an exotic jazz guitairist fused with cyborg arms.

Oh, undoubtably a guitar virtuoso, but i see shredders as more rock/metal based. And very few shredders play runs that COMPLEX, generally its scalar or arpeggic, with each lick containing large sections of and given character largely by usage of different techniques...

Anyway!

Im uploading yet more lane, dontchas worry, there'll be a keyboard solo up soon (for those who didnt catch the UG squirrel's post! All praise UG squirrel!), and a few other things once i get some vids recoded...

Yeh, i think they do - shawn did ask patrice vigier specially for a super flat radius, super low action. Its due to his arthritis and tendonitis, which meant playing guitar was very painful for him. Hence he made it as easy as possible to play. He could play like that on a strat. Maybe not his "AAAAAAAAAARGH WTF THATS NOT POSSIBLE" stuff, but certainly stuff that thats in a league above rusty and fareri!

Factoid of the day - Shawn Lane played piano at Paul Gilbert's wedding!

I completely disagree about the feeling. I gaurentee you, there has been a jam, or a song where they were just trying do something for the sake. IMO Shawn is always in his music, even if the music is show off music, like the MIT jam. He was always beautiful in his presentation, and even if it was over the top, he was over the top along with it, because he is his music, or better yet, the music is him. He couldnt play a dishonest note if he had tried.

Some good Shawn videos:

^ its awesome, innit?

Nevermore, please try and remember that you ahve no idea who's actually most soulful - what you're really saying is which one has the greatest capacity to move the emotions, isnt it?

And if its not, how the hell do you tell how much someone loves their music? Its impossible!

Stop this nonsense now! At least he's not trying to put EVH above lane technically, which i've seen some try, lol.
