Some lovely British black metal for you. The songs are really quite cool, and they have a very interesting philosophy behind their music. Some weird shizzle going on in there, they use weird bongoes and lutes, that kind of stuff. Check them out here www.themeadsofasphodel.com

What do you think?

OK, I know by posting here I am performing m4joR thr34d bumP4g3, but this is the reason...

Contrary to my opinions posted in the magazine thread, I went and bought Metal Hammer for the article on Arch Enemy (which, once again, turned out to be a pretty crap issue overall). To make the issue somewhat purchase worthy, I read some of the other article features and stumbled on The Meads...

Dredging up what memory I have of this band, I read the article and I found it absolutely enthralling. Tommy Udo, author of the 'Subterranea' section of the magazine (the place where you are likely to find the more gr1m and und3rgr0und bands in the magazine's backlog) went to meet the band in what appeared to be the base of a cult that the band belong to. He was ordered to take an oath, and was then presented with a fragment of the "true cross" (which I assume to be a reference to...y'know..."the" cross..."THAT" cross, although whether it was actually a fragment is highly debateable) and was ordered to piss on it. Then he was told to kneel and write across his forehead, in blood, 'Jesus is a cunt' in Latin. Then the interview begins...

I won't spoil the rest of it for those of you who haven't read it. But these strike me as being one of the most fascinating black metal bands out there. They do not focus at being the most gr1m band around, they don't try and slip any over-fantastical demonic witchcraft or wizardry into their lyrics. They seem to focus on pure philosophy, and use this as a lyrical medium to denounce Christianity. Anyone can say 'f
uck god (the criticism that often befalls bands such as Deicide) or 'Jesus is a cu
nt a la the Cradle of Filth T-shirt, but hardly any bands approaches the topic with the degree of philosophical research and knowledge that The Meads of Asphodel display. I believe that this is the thinking man's black metal, and I believe that it deserves more than the two or three replies listed above this post. If you want to know more about the music and the messgae, please click on the link as posted in the first post and leave a comment here. Thanks.

dammit you're smart... Thats probolly why i like them. Sometimes the stupidity of NSBM or Normal Satanic BM is to much to take. (not to say national socialists are dumb, but anyone who believes hitler was a pagan is really dumb.. and doesn't know history.)

I love this band...

BTW i started a thread on these guys... you should use the search button more often mate.
I was here for a while.

Then I was gone.

Now I'm back cause Obama.

^I think since there is very limited discussion on them atm, there's nothing wrong with having another thread. Good find btw.

A bit of a huge bump here, but has anyone else got round to listening to The Murder of Jesus the Jew?

Ive got it on at the moment, and its certainly one of the more interesting albums I've heard this year.

Metatron's codex, a 60,000 word guide to the lyrics from The Murder of Jesus the Jew if anyone is interested.

Wow, that is insanely cool. I, of course, would need to take his words with a grain of salt, to say the least.

I cannot seem to stop listening to "The Murder of Jesus the Jew" lately. One of the most diverse albums I've ever heard, and the songwriting doesn't suffer for the most part. The segment that begins at about 4mins and 20seconds into 'Addicted to God' is freaking brilliant, and the clapping that kicks in on "Apocalypse of Lazarus" must be heard as it's freaking hilarious/awesome. There's also a plethora of some of the catchiest lines that I can't stop singing along to and annoying my friends with. The lyrics are highly interesting/amusing and I plan on printing out a copy of Metatron's Codex to read finally.

Hugely impressed with this album, Damascus Steel is sounding pretty good so far as well.

The new album 'Sonderkommando' is due out soon.

Clocking in at a mammoth 70+ Mins this will be the darkest & most epic journey to date.

The album is symbolized by the vivid grimly dark artwork from artist Aisha Louisa Al-Sadie www.aishasart.co.uk, to whom we give a huge thanks to.

The LP will feature the debut full length performance from new Norse blast master André Kjelbergvik Thung as well as the usual array of guests, whom are: Christina Poupoutsi (Ebonillumini & The Higher Craft), Mories (Gnaw Their Tongues), Rob Miller (Amebix), Oristalla (Diversis), Alan Davey (Gunslinger), Mirai (Sigh), Will Banyard, JM (Wolves of Avalon), Gods Tower, Bruce Hamilton, Malcolm Tait & Harry 'Son of Metatron'.

Tracklisting:

1). Sonderkommando
2). Wishing Well of Bones
3). Aktion T4
4). Silent Ghosts of Babi Yar
5). Children of The Sunwheel Banner (Part 1)
6). Children of The Sunwheel Banner (Part 2)
7). Lamenting Weaver of Horror
8). Sins of The Pharaohs
9). Last Train To Eden
10). Hourglass of Ash
11). The Mussulmans Wander Through The Infernal Whirling Fires Amongst Silent Shadows to be Fed Into the Thirsting Jaws of a Godless Death Machine to Cough Up Their Souls to the Nazi Moloch Who Sits Within a Ring of Smoking Infant Skulls
12). Send My Love To Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz

Hopefully with all things blowing in the right direction the album will be available early/mid February. Also keep a look out for the promotional video 'A Glimpse into the Sonderkommando' a mini documentary that will be uploaded next week.

Hails & Cheers for your support, JD & the Meads.

I like it. I think it's quite a shocking or perhaps evocative image. You've got the darkness and the vividness of the fires, the striped pyjama's has become something of symbol of Jews in concentration camps since the film, you've got a jew being carried by a rope around the neck to be incinerated by two other Jews (as that's what the Sonderkommando was, Jews forced against their will to work for the nazi's, in clearing the gas chambers) I think as imagery and colours go it's very striking.

Good image sure, the idea is sound. But the actual execution is... well childlike.

I'm no expert on art. But I think there's a depth and a quality that belies that of a school student. Its rough and gritty and a little ugly, which in many ways reflects the situation. I think they have to be careful too, they don't want to glorify the situation, and perhaps having a piece of fine art might belittle the suffering that went on or something. Perhaps I'm just reading too much into it.
#24
I think it's good art, very evocative. It might not be a technical masterpiece but most artists got over that a good few decades ago.
