Which CR guitarist(s) do you guys think is the best improvisor?

For me, my top five choices would be...

1) Duane Allman
2) Santana
3) Dickie Betts
4) Jimi Hendrix
5) Jerry Garcia

If listened to and watched all of these guys live, and I must say they are extremely awesome at what they do. So I'm wondering if you guys have a similar list or different guitarists in mind.

I like Joe's stuff but I honestly haven't heard enough of him live to judge whether he's a good improvisor... unless he improvises the solos on their studio albums.

I would definetly throw J Page up there. I love what he does to Kashmir on certain live shows. Also Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman from Yes improv their songs a lot. Check out South Side of the Sky on their new 35th anniversary dvd I'd recommend buying it.

he improvs most solos live. He's great, and I think Brad Whitford is just as good, if not better.

Anyways, my vote is for Jerry Garcia.
How to achieve Frank Zappa's guitar tone:

Step 1: Buy a Gibson SG
Step 2: Insert Green Ringer, EQ, 3 dead squirrels and a microwave into said SG
Step 3: Plug in and freak the **** out.

Those Molly Hatchet guys (remember them?) improvised nicely - can't say I know their names though.

Jerry Garcia, don't kid yourselves.

Maybe the guy from Jefferson Airplane, Jorma something.

Jorma Kaukonen (or something like that) is he name. He's definetly a good guitarists, and he's not just good at psychedilia, but blues too (he's no Clapton, but...).

Also, what do you mean by "Jerry Garcia, don't kid yourselves."? Do you mean he sucks or he's good and people shouldn't even be forgetting to consider him?

And yeah, seljer, the guys from Canned Heat are ****ing awesome. I've watched them on my Woodstock DVD, and apart from their classic "Goin' Up the Country", "A Change is Gonna Come" is one of the most heavy things ever. I mean, not like, heavy as in metal, but just how kickass it is.

Yeah, Knopfler's good.

Anyways, because my computer is being a douchecock and not letting me edit my posts, I'd like to just let you guys know (those who don't know, I should say) that in a breif time between 69-70, Harvey Mandel replaced Henry Vestine on guitar for Canned Heat.

My favorite has to be Page simply for the improv intro to Since I've Been Loving You on the LZ DVD. It is just on a whole different level.

Clapton, Duane Allman, and Dickey Betts. All their improv was so smooth and natural, its almost amazing that its not planned out. Jerry is great too, but very sloppy at times. And Hendrix is sloppier than a porno most of the time.

My old thread.

Anyways, it's been months (at least) since this thread was last posted in, and I would now like to add another name to my personal list...

Frank Zappa.

The lack of Jeff Beck in this thread kills me.

And I agree with Duane, and sometimes Santana.

I would say that Jimi Hendrix is overrated as an improvisor.

Nah, Hendrix is awesome I hate a lot of his music and the production and tone of all of it, but you have to know when to respect to someone as a guitar player and as an improviser.

Where's David Gilmour on your list
Mostly because of the difference between Echoes from the studio to live
However if you listen to any PF live you can hear the difference

Replace Jerry Garcia with Peter Green, switch the order just a tad, and that list will be my top 5.
