You know, as bad as Emperor became in their later years, it's easy to forget just how good they really were at one point. Many bands have tried to capture the "symphonic" sensibility they captured so perfectly on their half of the split with Enslaved (aka the Emperor ep), few, if any, have succeeded. Mostly, I think, because other bands trying to work this terrain have failed to incorporate sufficient negative space into their music, which tends to render it overly busy and excessively saccharine.

While i don't agree with you on your view of later Emperor albums, i find the Emperor/Wrath Of The Tyrant demo's to be absolutely amazing.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I believe I'd argue that the use of negative space has always been one of the real calling cards of successful black metal.

The headstock logo seems to be BC Rich, and he used to play Biches in the 90s.

He had some discussion in the pit. He called Kanye West an ape and said his music was for apes and ape lovers or something like that. Apparently people took that as a racist remark and he got into trouble. I suppose that's the reason he is banned but I am not entirely sure.

And yes, Emperor used to be awesome. Is Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk also worth getting into?

Geez, I didn't realize this site was so intolerant of apes.

If you don't have them already; get Wrath of the Tyrant and Emperor instead.

Wrath of the Tyrant and progress your way through their discography (Eps, demos) until you don't like what you're hearing anymore. They don't really have that much material.

Thanks.
Yeah, noticed on wikipedia that they don't have too many albums. It's like 4 actual full-length studio albums.

Nightside Eclipse is all you need.

The rest of Emperor ranges from average to annoying.
Ishahn's solo efforts are mostly laughable.
The worst part of The Sham Mirrors is Ishahn.

You misunderstand. I don't vouch for anything Ihsahn has done pertaining to Emperor, except for Nightside, and the preceding works.

I do however heavily endorse Wrath of the Tyrant as a noteworthy listen, due to it being a precursor to Nightside, and having Witches Sabbath.

So very true. If it were not for that the album would be nigh perfect.

Wrath of the Tyrant is a good listen, but it should be considered, as Jon said, a precursor to In the Nightside Eclipse, and not essential on its own. It has been a while since I listened to WotT, In the Nightside Eclipse is the only one I own, but I seem to recall one or more riffs from Nightside Eclipse to be taken directly from it.

Let's not forget that Ihsahn did contribute to, like, actually good music beyond the very first few Emperor releases, namely Zyklon-B and Thou Shalt Suffer; his keyboard performance in the case of the former band really helps the songs in a way similar to the style showcased on In the Nightside Eclipse... even in spite of this, I cannot deny that they fell harder and faster than any other titan of Norwegian BM, though

I dunno, if you subscribe to the belief that early stuff from Demon Burger is good, then they fell pretty damn fast and pretty damn precipitously. I dont though [nor would I call them one of the titans of Norse Metal/BM], so I'd agree on Emperor/Ihsahn.

I may be at odds with a few people here, but I enjoyed the composition on Anthems aside from a few parts. It was the beginning of the extreme pretentiousness, sure, yet I still feel it created a vivid, striking atmosphere, had a strong narrative feel (unlike completely fragmented and directionless later things he did) and in terms of arrangements was complex but accessible. It was probably as far as Emperor should have gone, like a fruit that ripened - but one that was allowed to rot on the branch. That's just to my ears though, obviously plenty of people here feel differently.

I actually agree. Mostly, Anthems is pretty damn good to my ears.

Although all Emperor has the problem of actually having some of the worst production in the Norse scene. Namely, instead of just being intentionally raw but still clear like Darkthrone or Burzum or what have you, Emperor's production always seems really muddy (for want of a better term). That is, there's way too much going on, and in the end you cant hear the guitars very clearly at all (and as Fenriz says, Black Metal is inherently riff-based).

I ****ing love Emperor. I don't have all of Anthems but I've heard most of it. The first half of Equilibrium is ace imo. I don't have Prometheus either, only the songs on the Scattered Ashes compilation. And I really enjoy Ihsahn's solo material, so I seem to be at odds with pretty much everyone here.

Emperor reuniting for Wacken 2014.

Reunited Norwegian black metallers EMPEROR will headline next year's edition of Wacken Open Air festival, set to take place July 31-August 2, 2014 in Wacken, Germany. The news was announced earlier today at this year's Wacken Open Air at a press conference which was attended by EMPEROR members Ihsahn (real name: Vegard Sverre Tveitan) and Samoth (real name: Tomas Haugen).

EMPEROR released its swansong, "Prometheus - The Discipline Of Fire And Demise", in September 2001. It was an epic and progressive metal album that once and for all marked EMPEROR as one of the most adventurous and gifted black metal bands of all times. In 2005, EMPEROR surprised all with an unannounced appearance at Oslo's famed Inferno festival. Following the performance, the band announced additional concerts that would include a visit to America; marking the second trip to the States in the band's legendary career. Fans flocked to New York City and Los Angeles to witness the sold-out performances. In 2007, additional shows would see the band return to the U.S. for a repeat performance in New York City, a stop in Chicago, and what would be their final American performance in Los Angeles.

In a May 2012 interview with Gun Shy Assassin, Ihsahn stated about the possibility of more EMPEROR live performances in the future: "After 2007, that was really a final chapter for all of us. But there's always some underlying pressure to do something. Usually, I just say plain 'No.' I can understand the nostalgia and all that. If I wanted to be as nostalgic as everyone else, it wouldn't make any sense for me to actually make any new music [with my solo project] ."

He added: "People who are old-time EMPEROR fans still think I'm 17.

"I am in contact with the guys, and we talk almost weekly; they're good friends. What can I say? Never say never. For the moment, I am so occupied with my own project — that's my main priority."

Ihsahn said he left EMPEROR because he wanted different things.

"I ended up doing most of that last EMPEROR record on my own. If we still did EMPEROR, and if it were up to me, what I do now… that's what we would sound like."

But there will be no new music from EMPEROR, Ihsahn said.

"Part of the reason why our albums keep on selling is probably because we were always an uncompromising band, and that is a tradition I would like to uphold. If we did a new EMPEROR album, what kind of EMPEROR album would people like? I say listen to the stuff I do, and the stuff that Samoth does, and you can more or less figure out what a new EMPEROR record would sound like, and that sounds nothing like old EMPEROR. Trying to duplicate something from the past would just turn everything into a parody.

"Would anyone want a black metal album made just for the sake of making a lot of money?" Ihsahn asked. "I get all of these requests to get back with EMPEROR. In the spirit of black metal, I do whatever the hell I want. That's the whole point of black metal. If I even consider letting anyone else try to tell me what I should do with my music, that, by definition, would make it non-black metal… as I have learned it."

let's hope for them to make an appearance at MDF too
