This is here to hopefully clear up problems that have been had in the other stickies of arguments over what's emo and what's not. If you have any suggestions for additions to the thread (and if you've seen this on the first thread and think you're clever by saying, "emo sucks", the just leave now before I warn you) the please post, although not everything will get put up as not everything is an essential.

Brief History and Essential Albums

1980's

In the 1980's the Washington DC punk/hardcore scene was at its height and evolving. Out of inspiration from them and new bands forming out of old DC bands the 'emo' genre was born. At this point the term was barely used and when it was it was considered a sub-genre of hardcore music. A scene myth is that the term was first said at a Rites of Spring concert when a member of the crowd shouted out, "you guys are so emo" due to the way the band acted on-stage (emotionally).

Embrace - Embrace
The Hated
Rites of Spring - Rites of Spring

1990's

In the 1990's the genre was really still starting out and few bands actually considering themselves 'emo', it was still just a sub-scene of hardcore, and then around 1993/94 bands started fusing the hardcore elements of emo with alt/indie rock stylings thanks (in part) to influences of Nirvana and the grunge scene (although there were still some sticking to the original sound).

Braid - Frame and Canvas
Cap'n Jazz - Schmapp'n Schmazz (features on 'Analphabetapolothology')
Christie Front Drive - Stereo
Copper - Drag Queen
Elliott - False Cathedrals
Falling Forward - Hand Me Down
Hoover - The Lurid Traversal of Route 7
Indian Summer - Science 1994 (CD) / Hidden Arithmetic (LP)
Jimmy Eat World - Clarity
Mineral - Power of Failing
Moss Icon - Lyburnum
The Promise Ring - Very Emergency
Seven Storey Mountain - Based on a true story
Split Lip - Fate's Got a Driver
Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
Texas is the Reason - Do you know who you are?

Also in the 90's screamo came into fruitition as an evolution of emo through emo-core. It took hardcore to it's max but tended to include melodic breakdowns and continued the general idea of what emo was about (not all of these bands were around in the 90's).

Amanda Woodward - La decadence de la decadence
City of Caterpillar - City of Caterpillar
Envy
Funeral Diner - Underdark
Heroin - Heroin
Jerome's Dream - Completed (1997-2001 discography)
La Quiete - Tenpeun: 01-05
Saetia - A Retrospective
Swing Kids - Discography
Yaphet Kotto - The Killer Was In The Government Blankets
You and I - Discography
Wow, Owls! - Pick Your Patterns

At the end of the 90's a small sub-section of screamo arrived that got coined by fans as 'Midwest/East Coast break-up core' due to bands releasing a quick flurry of 7" singles and breaking up shortly after.

Hassan I Sabbah
Neil Perry
Orchid
Ursurp Synapse

2000's

1905's 'Voice' was released post 9/11 and contained influences from a wide range of styles and really shows the different directions that would be formed out of emo music (both poppy acoustic and heavy, traditional hardcore songs).

The birth of a new Millenium saw emo bands getting a lot more attention, and quite a lot of this is owed to Texas is the Reason who were one of the first to be picked up by MTV and major record labels. It was still not considered a mainstream genre until Jimmy Eat World came out with 'Bleed American' and everywhere was playing 'Salt sweat sugar'. It then spawned a million other bands who were allowed the same kind of success that J.E.W. saw.
A few tried to merge it more with the pop-punk sound of Blink 182 and Green Day that they grew up with and were considered emo by the media but really were a form of pop-rock.

Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl Vol. 1
Finch - What it is to burn
Jets to Brazil - Perfecting Loneliness
The Promise Ring - Wood/Water
Taking Back Sunday - Tell All Your Friends
Thursday - Full Collapse

Acoustic sound

Along with the pop fueled bands of the 00's, some musicians also took the idea a step further and removed nearly all obvious influence of the early innovators, but in their head still contained influences from 80s hardcore and 90s emo. The media had latched on and bundled these bands alongside the hardcore legends in the emo genre. Quite a few of these also decided that solo was the life for them after appearing in previous emo bands.

City & Colour - Sometimes
Dashboard Confessional - Swiss Army Romance
Kind of Like Spitting - Old Moon in the Arms of the New
Owen - I do perceive

Emo Influences (across the eras)

Fugazi - 13 Songs
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
The Misfits - Bullet EP
The Pixies
Shudder to think - Get your goat
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
Quote by Mia (Pulp Fiction)

That's when you know you found somebody special. When you can just shut the f*ck up for a minute, and comfortably share silence.

2000's

In 2002 Victory Recordes realesed an album that spiked the "emo" scene, and it is still on most people's list for top album ever, it is on mine.

Tell All Your Friends - Taking Back Sunday*

Two years later, with the demise of Dashboard Confessional, a new emo acoustic band steped into the spot light and realsed their first album on 111 records.

Sunsets and Car Crashes - The Spill Canvas *

Em, essential links; fourfa.com of course.

I would put up Mineral's Power Of Failing instead of ES.
And I'd add SDRE's Diaryto the 90's piece
Maybe analphabetapolothology instead of schmapp'n schmazz cuz it's a hell of a lot easier to get
And 30degrees Everywhere instead of Very Emergency for Promise Ring.

All imo, of course. Nice job Andrew

EDIT: 30 Degrees Everywhere was released in 2001, sorry
Because light strikes a deal with each coming night.

Maybe have a seperate section at the end : Pop-Emo - recently, "emo" has become popular on MTV but is largly disdained by the scene cause it blows hard. TRL being the death blow.

agree, cause not all 2000 emo is going to be pop-emo. pop-emo should have a section all it's own.

What I basically wanted to say has been said.
Real emo is dead, but emo-violence is certainly not.
Along with another_vandal's list, check out Kaospilot, Envy, La Quiete, Spirit of Versailles, Transistor Transistor and Drive Like Jehu.

And to emoISaDEADgenre, Dag Nasty were melodic hardcore, wrongly mistaken for emo.
And also to Andrew Biles, "Waiting" was a much better Thursday record.

God I've already had people on my ass about this thread People need patience and really need to understand the word essential. I wrote it in about two minutes last night so of course it's not going to include everything.

When this calms down a bit I'll start editing the post.

Oh, and saulhudsonslash warned (yet again).

^ Yeah, sorry, probably shouldn't have posted that here and just kept it to myself as the point of this thread is about what the board as a collective thinks are the essentials, I'm just getting annoyed easily at the moment.

Yeah just take it easy, suggestions are what this thread is about, just keep it exclusive. As in No The Used - they're not essential in the least bit, except maybe if we make that "made for radio" section. I agree we can't rush this.

It shouldn't be subjective to people's opinions.
That's what a poll should do.

Ex.
Hawthorne Heights
The Used
Fall Out Boy.
Green Day

People might think: Oh, I hate them they must be emo.
OR
People might think: Oh, I love them and I'm trying to be all scene so they must be emo.

Whether you like them or not does not affect the genre they're in.

Futhermore:
Emery is not
The Used is not
The Appleseed Cast is not. (Indie)
