Rush - Cygnus X-1 Book II = 18 minutes and change.

Don't you just love bands who can throw 3 hour long concerts built on about 7 songs?
#10
the top 5 longest songs i have on iTunes are:

1.Mountain Jam- The Allman Brothers Band 33:40
2.Tweezer- Phish 30:55
3.Jam- The Grateful Dead 25:31
4.Dazed and Confused- Led Zeppelin 25:25
5.Atom Heart Mother Suite- Pink Floyd 23:44

yeah, long songs rock.
#11
I have a live version of Stranglehold that comes in at about 20 minutes. It's a lost art really, not to many bands due the long songs anymore. Pink Floyd was the best at them though, it always flowed well and never got boring.

oh yeah... generally means there's gunna be some live improv... that's my favorite part of a show.

Meatloaf was awesome at writing long songs. Who agrees?

Dire Straits was also pretty good at writing long songs. There's a couple songs on the Love Over Gold album that are quite long, and you got Money For Nothing which kicks ass.

The Allman Brothers Band - "Mountain Jam" ; Eat a Peach/Fillmore East time = 33:40 / At the Ludlow Garage (Disc 2) = 44:00
"Whipping Post" ; At the Fillmore East = 23:05

Led Zeppelin - "Dazed and Confused" ; How the West Was Won = 25:25
"Whole Lotta Love" ; How the West Was Won = 23:07

Pink Floyd - "Atom Heart Mother Suite" ; Atom Heart Mother = 23:44
"Echoes" ; Meddle = 23:28

Grateful Dead - "Dark Star" ; Live/Dead (The Golden Road) = 23:18
"Blues for Allah" ; One from the Vault (Disc 2) [Live] = 21:01

Yes - "Dance of the Dawn" ; Tales from Topographic Oceans (Disc 1) = 22:37
"Ritual/Nous Sommes Du Soleil" ; Tales from Topographic Oceans (Disc 2) = 21:52

I'm giving a few examples from some different bands of the longer songs I've currently got on my iPod/iTunes. It seems as though Yes and Pink Floyd are the two bands that have songs in the 20+ minutes range that are off of studio albums; the rest are live stuff.
#15
Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)/Stepping Stone - Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock is 12:19

Machine Gun - Jimi Hendrix, Band Of Gypsys is 12:36

Dark Star - Grateful Dead, Live Dead is 23:07

Turn On Your Lovelight - Gratefuld Dead, Live Dead is 15:08

The End - The Doors is 11:42

Also all the Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull everybody has already listed.

It's because their music isn't all the same. It's progressive and it changes within the song. It has a beginning, a climax and an ending. It's like a big musical story whereas jam bands like Grateful Dead just pretty much jam with the same chords for 30 minutes.

Edit: Eight minutes isn't very long. Every song should be 8 minutes, that's the perfect length.

Dazed and Confused, on How the West Was Won is actually a medly of three songs, Dazed and Confused, Walter's Walk, and The Crunge, while Whole Lotta Love is a medly of five songs, Whole Lotta Love, Boogie Chillun, Let's Have a Party, Hello Marylou, and going. I'm not sure if these really count as long songs, I guess they do.

Yeah, I know their medlies, but technically I think that they'd still be considered "one song", but I'm not sure.

I don't have any of the actual times, but the Dead had some versions of Dark Star that got pretty lengthy. Anywhere from 10mins to 90mins. Sometimes longer, depending on how high they were
#21
Iron Maiden "Rhime of the Ancient Mariner" approx. 17 mins (probably not the most classic rock)

The Beatles "Hey Jude" approx. 7ish mins (probably long for a single at the time)

Mandrake route by DP have a 25 minute version but no one is going to beat Jethro Tull. Maybe if you combine parts 1 and 2 of tubular bells I think they go for about 30mins each (a bit less) but thats not really classic rock.

90 minutes?!??

The longest in my library (computer) right now is only 10:22......Achilles' Last Stand.

There's a whole lot more songs I'd like on there though.

I just checked my music file and Mandrake Route actually goes for 34mins not 25. But the best version goes for 42mins but I don't currently have that

Uriah Heep - July Morning 10:31
Led Zep - Achillies Last Stand 10:23
Uriah Heep - The Magicians Birthday 10:21
Deep Purple - Child in Time 10:17

Other info I'm not sure is correct because I havent heard it

Jethro Tull?s ? - Thick as a Brick ? - 43:44
Led Zepplein?s live version of Dazed And Confused lasts about 36:38.

Agreed. I don't mind if a song is long, as long as it has different parts and sections. If your music is making a point that happens to take 20 minutes, by all means go right ahead.

But when I hear mindless pentatonic jamming over the same chord progression with no climaxing or variation or whatever, I want to shoot myself. Or the band.

Close to the Edge by Yes is a good 18 minutes or so. It also happens to be one of the greatest songs ever.
