I'm to lazy to wrrte anything so I'm just going to be using what slipdisc wrote here:
http://www.chinesedemocracy.com/viewtopic.php?t=19608

Enjoy.

Yes, it’s a long read and it contains more praises than the average gospel song and no I really don’t care for anybody using these obvious facts or any other secondary bullshit to tear this thread off topic. This thread is not designed to marginalize Ron’s (or any other players') accomplishments by (indirectly) expressing your favoritism for somebody else (so no mr.X vs mr.Y- bullshit). I don’t care about the amount of replies this thread gets. As long as I can use it as a reference concerning my personal opinion on Ron (whenever the comparisons start again), it’s already a success by my standards. If next to this it can serve as a place to express your own appreciation for Ron and/or maybe learn some more about him (or post nice clips, stories etc etc etc), then be my very welcome guest. Let's keep it positive....

In short: oblige to the intention of the thread or hit the back button on your browser, it’s really that simple. There's a whole board out there to be an ass on.

Genius Composer, Virtuoso and Producer
Among the few true virtuosos of today, Ron probably is one of the most genius composers and producers. Mixing contemporary rock with Zappa-esque sophistication, satire and lounge music Ron always portrays an eventually optimistic perspective. The word “eventually” is key here, because the road that’s being traveled towards “optimism” always contains many detours, such as: pain, surrealism, the bizarre and a generally drastic worldview. This unique approach, evolving around contrasts, makes the emotional impact Ron achieves on his listeners’ psyche his greatest forte.

In his music Ron experiments effortlessly with incredible instrumental and vocal harmonies, amazing arrangements, non diatonic concepts, blazing speed, bizarre tempo changes and near-criminal abuse of his gear though technically unlimited chops. As a matter of fact: Ron’s music contains some of the most mind-bending, technically unlimited, clean and fluid (and fastest) guitar playing ever recorded (with solo’s often being improvised at the spot). His thimble tapping alone is enough to keep hordes of aspiring virtuosos out of their sleep. He’s one of the technically most well versed players of our time. However, the composer in Ron never fails to let all of the aforementioned happen solely in support of the song. Never resorting to meaningless egocentric guitar gymnastics. If you just focus on Thal's dazzling technique then you are missing out on 75% of his brilliance; not only is Ron better than just about everyone technique wise, he also writes really original, catchy and powerful songs. He’s responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed (exceptionally creative) songwriting ever to come forth out of the virtuoso scene. Recorded in his own studio, relying on his own production-skills.

Ron shares his knowledge as a honorary faculty member at Raleigh Music Academy giving workshops along with other greats like Greg Howe, John Petrucci and Andy Timmons and by teaching music production at SUNY Purchase College.

As far as songwriting goes it’s evident that Ron doesn’t confine himself to a particular genre and/or concept. Instead he blasts through practically all of them, like the musical equivalent of an alchemist. Varying from jazz (where he get’s his great sense for improvisation from) to nouveau flamenco, via blues, metal, punk and neo classicism. Frankensteining it all into something totally new, yet unmistakably his. While executing everything he sets his mind on, with the impeccable intonation his “absolute pitch” allows him to. Popularly known as “perfect pitch”, absolute pitch is the (rare) ability to identify the letter-name of a sounded note, without the benefit of a reference note. An ability shared by few other musical giants such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Jimi Hendrix, Ludwig von Beethoven and Brian Wilson. Paul Warren, the founder of the aforementioned Raleigh Music Academy (and a phenomenal guitar player himself), shared this interesting testimony of Ron’s amazing abilities on the Petrucci messageboard:

“He has perfect pitch and a photographic memory for music, so playing back a song (any song) and trying to include the other parts (bass, other guitars, keys) at the same time is second nature to him. He's the only player I've ever seen (other than Guthrie perhaps) who has the ability to play anything, of any genre, and make it seem like he's been doing it for years. His abilities transcend technique. He could listen to the most insanely difficult piece and play it back. It's unreal.

I was in a music store one time with Ron and a guitarist was testing out an amp. He was a fairly advanced jazz player and was playing some very cool walking jazz chord stuff, with a bit of improvisation thrown in. Ron wasn't plugged in, but was playing a guitar and played EVERYTHING note for note which that guy played. Chords, improvised melody lines - everything. It sounded like a one second delay was turned on. Ron wasn't playing loud enough for the guy to hear him and he wasn't making fun of his playing. He was simply repeating everything because he thought what the guy was playing was cool. When somebody has that quick and perfect of a musical ear AND there is no technique that holds him back, the door is wide open to any possibility.”

Seeing Ron excel in all styles and never drowning in his own ambition, you realize that the term “unique style” was never more appropriate yet incredibly hard earned. It’s commonly known that it’s very hard to remain authentic and unique on such a broad playing field, full of niches with specialists. Needless to say (but I’ll do it anyway), Ron’s music doesn’t only consist of high octane mayhem. Like Buckethead, and all other well versed virtuosos, he also has a mellow and ambient side to him. Ron also has a very versatile singing voice with tons of range. Therefore the vocals on his albums always live up to the abundance of instrumental brilliance and open yet another unique (not many virtuosos sing) dimension for Ron to ventilate his genius mind: intelligent and witty lyrics.

Fretless Master
Something that consistently gets severely underrated in our precious community, is the fact that Ron is one the few world-wide virtuosos on the very difficult to master fretless guitar. The difficulty of playing a fretless instrument is illustrated by the amount of bad (out of tune) fretless playing that is around and the way Ron’s perfect pitch driven efforts set a huge contrast to that. Playing fretless is very difficult because the instrument requires much more training of the fretting hand (for exact positioning and shifts) and more ear training to be able to differentiate the minimal differences in intonation that fretless instruments can express (that’s where “perfect pitch” comes in). On a fretless you don’t bend the strings, you slide to the desired pitch, wile keeping your fingers intonated. The pay-off of being able to play the fretless guitar is grand because of the immense musical freedom and the very unique possibilities it provides, such as: micro-tones, sliding harmonics, unconventional chord shapes and bending notes in opposite directions.

Humor in Music
Thal’s incorporation of humor into his music (even more than Buckethead), doesn’t mean he’s just goofing around, not taking his art seriously. Humor is one of those essential human qualities that’s probably most difficult to be expressed in music, in a sophisticated manner. Incorporating humor means a musician is able to do something shocking, surprising, unexpected, absurd; putting two things together that don't belong together, which are incongruous. It’s indicative for a well developed sense of contrast and an intelligent mind. It’s much easier to be serious in music, hence more practical examples exist. When confronted with this artistic bottle-neck, many musicians hide behind phrases like: “there’s no room for humor in music”. A statement of epic ignorance, musical mammoths like Mozart, Bach and Zappa would shake their heads at. Why should music harvest every other human quality, except one of the most essential and elementary ones? Especially when it’s that inherent to someone’s personality as Ron’s?

Thal succeeds in a way that many since Zappa wouldn’t have thought ever to be possible again. Zappa who was one of Hendrix’s favorite guitar players (next to Billy Gibbons) and who introduced Jimi to the wah-wah pedal (after which Jimi took the effect to new dimensions). Off course Thal, just like Zappa, has made his fair share of serious music as well. Not every song has humor as one of its’ driving forces. It’s because of this versatility to do just about anything technically, compositionally and emotionally Ron has become a real musician’s musician, earning praises from virtuosos, fans and critics all over the world. Just because he’s this badly shaven, approachable, funny, ridiculously humble and nice guy, doesn’t mean he can’t be that extremely gifted person as well. It’s this rare mix of essential human qualities combined with an exceptional degree of talent that makes Ron such a breeze of fresh air in a scene that’s otherwise full of stereotypes.

He has this fretless guitar, and you can slide harmonics with it.
What guitar is that? That whole prospect seems really cool to me.

I own all 5 of his CD's, and they all rock.

And yes I have a Vigier Excalibur Surfretter Special

*cough* Ordered a Suhr Standard the day before yesterday, have to wait 4 months till it's done grrr *cough*

Damn straight, he's awesome, and a nice guy too. Got the chance to meet him. Its not often you can go to the bar after a gig and talk to both Guthrie Govan AND Ron Thal. Both very nice, and both extremely humble chaps.

It was at a gig that BIMM put on, first on was an awesome band called Jonas 3 (check them out), followed by Guthrie and finally Bumblefoot. Then at the very end Guthrie came back on and played with Bumblefoot, it was a truly amazing night. See, theres one more reason to come to BIMM
