The locrian mode is quite an evil sounding scale, linkin park use it loads apparently.

Or, you could just change random notes of a major scale and play so fast that it doesn't relaly matter what notes you choose.

Indeed it is, i find it very hard to use convincingly--
E Locrian= E F G A Bb C D- sounds great over m7b5 and diminished chords.

You dont really need scales for metal shed. You can buy one at Home Depot or Loew's and they'll set it up in your backyard... for free

sorry, im a dick and that wasnt funny

Like Stratwizard said, learn to travel all over the neck just using chromatics. And even though it's probably the most cliched and overused scale in soloing, I think Eminor has a certain dark and moody quality.

Abuse the chromatics.

Chromatics sound the most dark and dissonant

Or even better, super locrian.

Yes

Mix exotic scales (Arabian, Japanese, Egyptian, etc) with a hint of chromatics and harmonic minor for some fukin pwnage.

You can't go wrong with some good ol' chromatic lines or transitions from scale to scale. Enough scales have been mentioned anyways.

The Phrygian major (or dominant?) is a favourite of mine. Whole tone's pretty cool as well.

Not really, with badass theory, you don't need flawless technique.

I'm just wondering, is there a wrong way to play the chromatic scale? I'm too lazy to write real solos, so I thought I'd just improvise with the chromatic scale using tremolo picking.

no.....

It contains all notes. The "correct" way to do it is 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc

Isnt that just an A major scale?

Basically learn all the different shapes of the major/minor scales that extend up the neck and just pick one that sounds good with the song to be your root scale.

EG: Playing in E, You could start with the natural minor scale (Aeolian mode I think) in the E position and extend it all around the neck using the other modes that join on around it.

EG 2: Playing in D, You could start with the standard harmonic minor scale and extend it all around the neck for playing with a dark and mysterious sound.

Sometimes it sounds excellent when modes are mixed with pentatonics, and I dont care if you think they're basic, they kick ass (Especially when used like shawn lane did)

Its always good to learn some exotic/cultural scales like the gypsy, hungarian, balinese etc to really put a twist into your sound.

Use only the super locrian scale, harmonized in minor seconds with another guitar (even over major chords). A run up and down the scale may do, but it must at least be 16th notes at 220 bpm. Any deviation will result in loss of metalness.

Don't use the Chromatic; it will sound more romantic and poppy then dark.

The darkest scale you can use is the natural minor.
what happened to the proposed Kirk Hammett flamenco album?

His acoustic didn't sound good with wah pedal, I suppose.

Pedal point licks are another great way to sound dark.
