i always kind of wondered this what does a amp mean when it says plexi like a "Marshall 1959SLP 100Watt Super Lead Plexi Head"

and why don't newer amps have the word plexi?

Hey you look kind of like me.

Except for the sexy man goatee, and kickass shades. And sweet guitar.

I'm jealous.

The Marshall Super Lead had a plexiglass frontpanel; which is why it is called 'plexi'.
#3
how much does that affect the tone of it?

Why would the construction of the head affect tone? After all, it doesn't actually generate sound; it generates an electrical signal turned into sound by the speaker cabinet. So you could make your amp head out of granite or milk boxes and it wouldn't make a difference.

Plexiglass plate the controls are mounted on (its painted gold though... edit: note - the first marshalls had actuall aluminium plates I believe)

specifically the amps out of the JTM and JMP series in the late 60s and 70s

possibly denoting that its out of the series and not out of the JCM800s (where they also continued the 1987 and 1959 models)

its more of a thing of the general fame of the amps, its like saying "1957 Strat", its from that age old era so it has some mojo magic tone **** in it cause its hand wired an all that (old Marshalls do rock though)

They add Plexi to note a particular model, some people are looking for something very specific when they buy amps.
It's a fine line between clever and stupid.
#9
as mentioned, its just a nick-name given to those '66-'69 Marshalls with Plexi-glass front panels

...that would be funny if Marshall cashed in and made something like an MG100 Plexi model and just slapped the name on it and it was still a normal sucky MG. All the kids would be raving over it. "look at me, I'm jimmy page"

Its just a name thats been pinned with the model. Plexi are the best Marshalls IMO
If everyone liked what I did, I probably wouldn't be playing anything of depth.
