Ok lets discuss lyrics and what we think they mean.

First Wish You Were Here. Correct me if I am wrong but the song is about Syd? It says did you exchange a walk on part in the wall for a lead role in a cage. Do think that has to do with him having to leave the band and going kinda crazy?

As a suggestion, maybe post lyrics to help those who may not have heard the song interpret them?

Remember, google is your friend.

Pigs kinda reminded me of anti government feelings. Just because it said hand on your heart and then something about a charade and saying they were a joke.

Led Zeppelin - Dancing Days

Dancing days are here again
As the summer evenings grow
I got my flower I got my power
I got a woman who knows

I think its alright
I said its alright
I guess its all in my heart
youll be my only
my one and only is that a way it should start?

Crazy ways are evident
in the way you wear your clothes
Sipping booze is precedent
As the evenig starts to glow

chorus

I told your mama I'd get you home
But I didnt tell her I have no car
I saw a lion he was standing alone
with a tadpole in a jar

So what is the lion part about? And, the whole song? The lion part especially

Shine on You crazy Diamond
Coincidence? I think not!

And yes, Animals is based on George Orwell's Animal Farm. I have not read it yet, but from I understand, it is just one big allegory to the history of the Soviet Union.

There's not as much in common between Animal Farm and Animals as everyone thinks. In Animal Farm, the sheep are (to my rememberance, I haven't read it in a while) nonexistant, and even if they are there they don't overthrow the dogs. The dogs are very much present, but they're not talked about very much and there's no backstory as described in the song Dogs. I do think that the beginning and end of the album are very significant, because at the end of the book the pigs become nearly human (and in the beginning, the humans were oppressing the animals). So by putting the same song, essentially, at both the beginning and end of the album, Roger is showing the same thing the book is, that even though times change, things stay the same.

As far as I know, Dancing Days is just a song about summer.

However, I think these two lines might sort of tie into the entire verse. It's about a guy and his girl, and maybe the lion is some representation of the guy, because lion's are strong, and the girl may be the tadpole in the jar - the jar resembling how she really can't do much, but the lion, being outside of the jar, is able to do what he please with the tadpole, and the tadpole must face everything.

Yeah, I suggest you pick up Animal Farm and read it, because it is really short and simply written. You could read it in one sitting. Then you'll understand.

Sherman man, I respect you as much as anyone else here, but there are many later Zep songs that have some deep meanings and have all together developed lyrics. Examples being The Rain Song, Ten Years Gone, and Battle of Evermore.

ya, most of the earlier zeppelin songs were about women, more women, women breaking up with you and well how many "inches of love" robert plant had...

There later songs were alot more devellopped lyrics wise... like other said, there are tons of good examples

I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin.
I see bad times today.

Chorus:
Dont go around tonight,
Well, its bound to take your life,
Theres a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Chorus
All right!

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like were in for nasty weather.

Animals is loosely based on Animal Farm. The three pigs in Pigs 3DO are not talking about the pigs in the book Animal Farm, they attack/criticize three different people.

so how about getting back to the point, and a song that might actually prompt some serious disection? fourth time around is one of my favorite dylan tunes:

When she said,
"Don't waste your words, they're just lies,"
I cried she was deaf.
And she worked on my face until breaking my eyes,
Then said, "What else you got left?"
It was then that I got up to leave
But she said, "Don't forget,
Everybody must give something back
For something they get."

I stood there and hummed,
I tapped on her drum and asked her how come.
And she buttoned her boot,
And straightened her suit,
Then she said, "Don't get cute."
So I forced my hands in my pockets
And felt with my thumbs,
And gallantly handed her
My very last piece of gum.

She threw me outside,
I stood in the dirt where ev'ryone walked.
And after finding I'd
Forgotten my shirt,
I went back and knocked.
I waited in the hallway, she went to get it,
And I tried to make sense
Out of that picture of you in your wheelchair
That leaned up against . . .

Her Jamaican rum
And when she did come, I asked her for some.
She said, "No, dear."
I said, "Your words aren't clear,
You'd better spit out your gum."
She screamed till her face got so red
Then she fell on the floor,
And I covered her up and then
Thought I'd go look through her drawer.

And, when I was through
I filled up my shoe
And brought it to you.
And you, you took me in,
You loved me then
You didn't waste time.
And I, I never took much,
I never asked for your crutch.
Now don't ask for mine.
"I see my light come shining from the west down to the east
Any day now, any day now I shall be released"

I don't think so...

"Since I've Been Loving You" contains the following lyrics:

I open my front door, hear my back door slam,
You know I must have one of them new fangled back door man.

*edit* Just looked it up on urbandictionary.com, and I was correct.

1. backdoor man
n. a man who services married/committed women i.e. the other guy. The original meaning derives from blues lingo and refers to the guy who comes in through the backdoor of the house, it has nothing to do with anal sex.

Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie

Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Weird and Gilly
And The spiders from Mars. He played it left hand
But made it too far
Became the special man, then we were Ziggy's band

Ziggy really sang, screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan, he could lick 'em by smiling
He could leave 'em to hang
They came on so loaded man, well hung and snow white tan.

So where were the spiders while the fly tried to break our balls
Just the beer light to guide us,
So we bitched about his fans and should we crush his sweet hands?

Ziggy played for time, jiving us that we were voodoo
The kids were just crass, he was the nazz
With God given ass
He took it all too far but boy could he play guitar

Making love with his ego Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper messiah
When the kids had killed the man I had to break up the band.

Is it just Bowie's story or is it some great metaphor?

animals in my opinion is an interpretation of human instinc, like how some people are like sheep and just follow the pack and eventually get killed in some way or another, and the dogs represent how some people are trained to take down anything that stands in their way and just look out for number one, pigs is probably about the government how sometimes things they do can be laughable
