hey

ive been playing both guitar and bass for awile, and im starting to find it more and more difficult switching from picking to using fingers when switching from playing guitar to bass. is there any real advantage to using a pick while playing guitar? i know it gives you a brighter sound, but is it worth it?

Well, try playing Master of Puppets without a pick.. Good luck. But really, if you're going to play metal, which uses a lot of fast picking on single strings, you need a pick. But of course, if you're going for classical, the game is a bit different..

It usually adds speed and definition to your notes.

But I have friends who play guitar without a pick. And really damn well too.

I use picks, mainly because my fingers are un-coordinated. It'd be awesome to be able to chicken pick, though.

As someone already mentioned, Mark Knopfler. Depending on what you are playing, you don't have to use a pick. I avoid picks when playing acoustic, and sometimes on the ol' electric. But some metal simply needs a pick.
