I'm looking into some high end Washburn electrics-Specifically:

WI66PRO
PI70

How would these compare to a Gibson Les Paul Standard? They seem to have all of the same components (Mahogany Body, Maple top, set mahogany neck) Along with some components that are actually better (Grover Tuners, Seymore Duncan Pickups).

So would either of these guitars be just as good quality (or possibly better) as the Gibson Les Paul Standard?

Gibsons are getting really overpriced, washburns have to sell at the price they are worth because they arent popular, washburns are great guitars, especailly the high end ones.

I was just thinking...you can get the top of the line Wasburn WI68 for about the same price as a Gibson LP Studio...

And every single component will blow the Studio out of the water.

I guess when you REALLY think about it, you are just paying for the Gibson name.

I'm leaning more and more towards the Washburn. I really don't want to drop an extra $1000 for the name Gibson.

are you after a les paul tone? if so, i wouldn't get the washburn wi66 pro. I tried the 65pro (basically the same, minus the maple top) and it didn't sound anything like a les paul.

it's good, but it's a totally different tone.

If the Washburn is Korean like the X50 Pro, I vote Gibson hands down, There is a big difference in tone between the mahogany from Honduras and the S. American rain forests in the Gibson vs. the mahogany from southeast Asia.

Not really. They aren't a known brand. If you said "Name a brand of guitar" to someone who doesn't play, the answer you'll get is either Gibson or Fender. Washburn needs to sell instruments cheaper with better components to attract buisness.

If you look up the specs on say the WI66PRO and the Gibson Les Paul Standard, they're strikingly similar. The WI66Pro also has many components that are better than the Gibson's.

the 66 will be korean (the 65 i tried was). As custom custom says, the mahogany in the LP will be better, in that case.

AFAIK, the american washburns are a similar price to LP's (here at least). Up to you, obviously. If you can get to try both, that'd be the first place to start...

yeah washburns are great. well worth the money.
i have like a bagillion of them.
they kill the les paul and still have enough energy to have dirty rotten sex with the daisy rock guitars.
if you'd believe me i'd tell you everything
#24
yea...is the WI64 any good?...i was thinking of getting one, people say it has a similiar tone to that of an G-400...what do you guys think?
#25
Yeah! They're nice guitars. You can get the distressed version for $300 at music123.com with a deluxe gigbag. The black distressed looks cool. For $300 it can't be beat. Heck, even the $400 for the deluxe version (with quilt maple top) is a great price.

I don't know about the g-400's tone because I haven't played one, but I do know that they sound really good. Material-wise it would probably be closer to a Gibson Faded SG.

Definetly try them out. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

^Have you tried a nice Washburn guitar before? I'm not saying anything about Gibsons not being worth the money. I made this topic a few days ago because I was trying to decide whether to get a high end Washburn, or keep saving for a Gibson.

I have a Washburn now and love it, and I've liked every other Washburn I've tried. They play great and sound great. And yes, I could probably find a heavily used Gibson Les Paul Studio for about $900. But, for that same price, I can get a Boogie Street Custom Washburn with a custom hardshell case brand new.

I don't deny that Gibsons are nice guitars, but Washburn being called a lesser brand is just absurd. Both companies make great guitars.

Hm...it was probably a low end one in the Idol series. The lowest end ones (like my WI14) are made of basswood, so the sound is pretty hit-or-miss. Mine sounds decent, but I'd guess that most have a cheap sound.

I'd suggest that you try out a higher end one like the WI64DL or the WI66PRO. They're more what I'm referring to, and from what I've played of them, both sound great.

I guarantee you could find a nice Gibson if you keep your eyes open, but personally, I'd say go for a nice SG rather than an LP . eBay is great for good deals if you keep your eyes open and check up on it frequently. I mean, you do already have a Washburn, so I'd say go with something new.

I own a Washburn Pilsen Idol. I also own a Gibson Les Paul. I play the Pilsen way more than my LP. Basically I like the neck profile of the Pilsen better than the LP because it's a bit fatter and fits my hands better. I also like the coil tapping feature. I'm one of the few players that actually use both neck and bridge pickups with hum and single coil tones. The neck joint on the Pilsen destroy's the LP..

The head guy at Washburn used to be the head of the Fender custom shop and Jackson. He took the Jackson neck joint and applied it to Washburn's Pilsen.

Lastly...everyone plays an LP and it's getting pretty boring. I really dig Alkaline Trio and Skiba turned me onto the Pilsen. He's playing it more than his gold top LP in his set.
#34
Oh yeah...forgot to say that I'm originally from Chicago and the Pilsen is named after a Chicago neighborhood. I dig that too.
#35
I think your tone would improve more with a better amp. I would take the Washburn since I don't have the dough to spend on a Gibson when I could get similar (not same SIMILAR) quality for a cheaper price. Its the law of dimishing returns.

Is the Gibson better? YES Is it better by $x? NO (where x is the price difference between the 2 guitars)

I played a dirt cheap washburn...

IT played ****ing better than any other $150 guitar I've ever picked up. I asked the guy at the store for a couple tools to set it up and we worked at it for a bit, messed with the pickup height/ polepieces, set the thing up the full way and it played like a monster. I think the dude from the store ended up buying it for his kid or something, haha.

Thats just a testament to the quality of Washburn, they have killer playing necks, resemble an ibanez, but you can get different tonewoods for teh body! Which make sit awesome.

As far as gibson vs washburn I don't know, never compared them side by side... but Gibson quality is going down the ****ter lately... IT really depends on the axes you try out.
#37
I have both a Washburn Idol WI64 and an Epi G-400. I would say the WI64 is more like an SG/G-400 than a Les Paul. The WI64 is a higher quality thant the G-400. Since it is more like an SG it is much lighter than a LP. Of the 7 guitars I have now the WI64 is the one I usually go to first.
#38
The Washburn Idols kind of seem like SG/Les Paul hybrids if you ask me. They have qualities of each in the shape. As for sound, I've only tried a few LPs and a few SGs, so I can't really compare them. All I know is that my WI14 sounds just as good as an Epi LP standard, if not better.

Genocide98, my Washburn is a "dirt cheap" model, but it plays like a dream. It has an awesome, FAST neck and great tone. The pickups could be a little less noisy and be a bit hotter, but for stock pickups on a cheap guitar they're kickass. I wish it had the Buzz Feiten system and the VCC on it though.

Have any of you guys seen the Boogie Street Washburn customs? You should really check them out. I'm thinking of getting the Idol Elite.

you can a practically brand new les paul studio with case for 900...did you actually look on ebay? a beat up studio will run you more like 600 on ebay not 900.

and i never even mentioned washburns or if there good guitars in my post but if your going to get a les paul style guitar you might as well get the real thing if you can get it for the same price or less.
