I am basically a complete beginner -- I have had an electric guitar for about 2 months now and I am confused as to how to skip a specific string. I know on some of the tabs I have seen it'll show lets say E-0 A-0 D-X G-3 D-3 E-0 ... this is just an example but can anyone tell me a technique to do that without stroking the first 2 strings then picking up my hand and restroking the bottom 3? Hope that this makes sense. Thanks

Well, rest a finger (or part of one) on the string that you're not supposed to play. Don't press it at all though, just keep touching it. This will mute the string.

Yes, it's really tough and annoying in a playing situation but you'll get used to it quite quickly.
