i happend to be in corpus today, so i decided to stop by the GC there. at first to buy a couple packs of strings, but of course, you have to hang out there a while, and have a little sit with some of the gear their. while walking around, i first came across a kramer barretta in light blue. single bridge pickup, OFR, $299. it looked pretty sweet, but the trem was broken. i'm not sure what was wrong with it, but some parts were hanging off and missing. so i didn't want to mess with it and make it worse. ( i have pictures, but my damned phone wont send them). anyway, i continued looking around, and found an Ibanez RG 1570 for $450. it was a brown-ish champagn color. the bridge pick up had been replaced to a dimarzio. i dk which model. i have pics of it too, but phone wont send them.

i was thinking of getting one of these guitars, probably the ibanez. what do you guys think? i'll get the picks up as soon as i can.

yes, the rg sounds like an awesome deal since you save about $300

I would probably lean towards the Ibanez. The Kramer sounds a little sketchy because you could end up having to replace the OFR.
#6
ibanez for sure............the OFR thing is probably gonna be way more that just replacing some parts

Kramer- those vintage Baretta's play like BEASTS!!! tone monsterss they are. and it isnt too bad to Replace an OFR- a black one will cost you around $125 new and if you install it yourself thats all the cost will be
#11
^ thing about it, i wouldn't know know much more about installing a FR than i would nuclear physics.

and it only has a bridge pick up, and i'd like to have a neck pick up there also. for versitility. if it's still their in a year or at the end of summer i might pick it up and make a project out of it.

i guess im a little biased, i have a Kramer 1984 with only the bridge pick up and honestly, thats all i need- i rarley ever need a neck pick up and if you happen to need those neck P.U. sounds you just roll off the volume a little and you'll have the same tone a neck P.U. would get you.

And about the Floyd- its already routed out and everything, i think all you would need to do is just swap each part for its equivilent. You could also always have a tech take care of it for you.

Btw, for more Kramer information check out this site Vintage Kramer

edit below:
It's hard to tell from the pic but it looks like someone just didnt lock the saddle all of the way and so the saddle fell out, thats maybe a $15 part, if that. If I'm right, then it shouldn't be much of a big deal- more/better pics would help out a lot though.

well, they'll feel totally different.

The kramer (judging by mine) will have a narrower nut, and will have a slightly thicker neck- think jackson, but slightly different. Also the single bridge pickup, while looking uber-cool in an EVH kinda way, seriously limits the versatility. That being said, if it's a USA kramer, assuming you like the feel, even if the floyd is totally busted, you can get a new OFR in the states for about $170, i think- so that means it's basically the same price as the ibanez. There's not much ot fitting one, all you have to do is desolder the ground wire going to the claw, and then resolder it to the new one (or you could even just keep the old claw, if it's still ok), then fit the thing. Up to you of course.

The ibanez is more of a shred guitar, while the kramer is more of a hard rock/hair metal/shred guitar. The ibanez will have a thinner, wider neck, and it's a basswood body.

I'm not 100%, but it looks like a paf pro at the bridge. Ewww, in other words. You could stick it in the neck, though.

Might be a super Distortion, not certain. If it sounds kind of wussy and a bit like vai, it's a paf pro, lol.

Up to you basically- if you want versatility, the ibanez. If you want cool in an 80's hair metal kind of way, the kramer.

Of course, this is superceded if you try them and like one's feel more than the other, lol.

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.

That pickup looks like an evo, just going by the polepieces.

Yeah, man, get the Ibanez. Kramers are nice, but if the trem is screwed up, you don't wanna mess with that.

EDIT waisec, it's a USA Kramer?

You need both those guitars in your life, my man.

^yep, that's what i'm talkin' bout. If it's a USA Kramer, $300...

even if the trem is screwed, assuming it hasn't wrecked the guitar where it attaches or something, you could get a new trem whenever...

what pickup does the kramer have in it?

hey derek, I think i saw that ibanez last time i went to guitar center, isnt something wrong with it, I think it was a pick up, but im not sure

Ha Ha dave changed the Avatar. Gp derek I live between alice and robstown where do you live?
#37
I would have to say the ibanez. I don't know what you could do to fix the trem unless i looked at it up close in real life, and it wouldn't be exactly cheap to replace it especially if you have to get some one to do it for you.
