Okay, you have 6 strings tuned normally, EADGBe. When you get a pack of strings for a 12-string guitar, you should have a set of normal strings and a set of thinner strings.

You have:
e - normal high E string
e - unison (same) to other high E
B - normal B string
B - unison to other B string
G - normal G string
G - one octave higher than other G string
D - normal D string
D - one octave higher than the other D string
A - normal A string
A - one octave higher than the other A string
E - normal low E string
E - one octave higher than the other low E string

The ones that are higher should have more tension.

This is how you should use this diagram to tune....

at the bottom of the diagram theres numbers 1 - 11. Start from 1 and work to 11.
But tune in this order: 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 - 10 - 1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 9 - 11

the first set of number ( 2 4 6 8 10 ) is tuning the normal strings to standard tuning. the numbers after, are tuning the extra set.

You should know how to tune to standard, so ill skip that part, as for the second set of numbers ( 1 3 5 7 9 11 ), retune the bottom number to match the top number.

Then you need a tuner, or a LOT of practice memorizing EXACTLY what the low E sounds like.

But, even if it isn't in tune, you can still use these steps to make the other strings in tune relative to the low E.

Instead of playing an open string and tuning, play the 1st frets and tune.

Hey everyone, I don't mean to be annoying or whatever but what are some good songs to play in different tunings? specifically 1/2 step down since I just learned that...I've been playing some Relient K and some Cartel but I don't know any other songs that require you to tune 1/2 step down. While we're at that...whole step down songs too?

Rachel, alot of green day's stuff is in half step down tuning. Also, you ought to try drop D or C tuning, then you can play other stuff like linkin park or whatever.

I've been experimenting a bit with drop B, sounds great.

As for D, some nirvana songs. Lithium and Come As You Are for example.

Its the exact same method as standard tuning for a guitar, except you need to know what note your Low E string is. You can use a piano, or online tuner for this.

Metallica (Black Album, maybe also Load and Reload)

Standard bass tuning is EADG (an octave lower than the lowest four strings on a guitar)
5 strings add a low B
6 strings I think add a high C
additional strings go on the high side

F# F# F# F# E B (low to high?)
I'm guessing the first two F#s are the same, and the next two are an octave higher, that makes most sense. I'm also guessing the B string is tuned down to E, and that the e is tuned down to B too.

1. Play the A string open and the E string at the 3rd fret. Tune the E string up to match the A string.
2. Play the E string open and the A string open. Tune the A string down to match the E string.
3. Play the A string at the 12th fret and the D string open. Tune the D string up to match the A string.
4. Play the G string open and the D string open. Tune the G string down to match the D string.
5. Play the B string at the 12th fret and the e string open. Tune the B string down to match the e string.
6. Play the e string open and the B string at the 7th fret. Tune the e string down to match the B string.


After doing that, I'm really not sure if that's meant to be low to high or high to low.

If it sounds wrong let me know.

With a tuner:

Play the E string at the 1st fret, tune it to G
Play the A string at the 1st fret, tune it to G
Play the D string at the 1st fret, tune it to G
Play the G string at the 1st fret, tune it to G
Play the B string open, tune it to E

Hey,
I'm trying to tune my guitar a 1/2 step down or whatever the term is, but I don't know how to do it. I know what the notes are they must be tuned to, but I don't know how it should be done. I tune my guitar regularly, but when I set the note to a D or whatever when I'm tuning the E string, it doesn't move on the little bar thing that moves on the tuner. is that even how I should go about doing it?
