I'll custom build you one for a thousand bucks, LOL. You have the budegt for a pretty nice one. I only paid around $50 for mine and it sounds pretty good. Now if you're talking about a pedal steel, that's another story

I'm also interested in lap steel; I've heard this one for the price isn't that bad: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Other/Stringed/Instruments?sku=518801
But it seems your budget allows for more... check out a starter PEDAL steel- cooler sounding + more versatile: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Other/Stringed/Instruments?sku=518051

Or you can make your own, something I plan on doing, using this site: http://www.buildyourguitar.com/resources/lapsteel/index.htm

I was thinking about building my own, actually I still plan to do it one day, I have confidence that I'll build a really nice one. I own the Artisan, without the stand. It's quite nice for the money, a little on the plain side. Could use a better nut, and the input jack ought to be moved, it puts the plug right where you palm wants to be.

I added the cost of all the parts I'd need to build one, minus wood, and it was a whole hell of a lot more than the cost of the Artisan. So once I get tired of it, I'll cannabalize it for the new one that I will make myself.
