you could get a peavey EVH 5150, then EVH phaser, then EVH flanger, then Chravel EVH signature guitar. that might be pretty close.
My Gear:
Gibson SG special (W/ S.D. Jazz(N) & JB (B))
Mesa-Boogie Solo Triple Rec. (with EL-34's)
Boss DD-6 Digital Delay
Boss TU-2 Chromatic tuner

you can only sound like EVH if you play like him.

but tonewise, turn the amp full blast. the brownsound is all about cranked amps and tubes..

hmmm see thats the thing.. my amp is a tube/ss hybrid (im pretty sure, read the review on harmony-central that i posted above) so when i crank it toooo much its too hard to control the feedback and sustain... so i do run the tubes as hot as i can without breaking up my tone TOO much....

and OBVIOUSLY u only sound like EVH if u play like him and blah blah blah no equipment can emulate his hands and all that malarkey ive heard it and said it a million times...

settings wont do much seeing as how every amp has a different dynamic, my bass turned all the way up, is probably half what a 5150 has for bass (or w/e, its just an example, i dont want a big writup now on the bass capabilities of a 5150)

but im gonna try turnin up some mids more than usual cuz i find VH's tone to cut through really well, so maybe some mids might help...

mid's won't help. it'll much up your tone. settings i'd suggest:

teble: 7
bass: 6
mid: 3 (not 10)
gain: 2,3

if you listen to van halen, his notes are crystal clear, you could heard his 3rds(in chords) perfectly well.

Aint talking bout love brown sound, turn master level all the way up, turn gain on lead channel all the way up and use post to control volume level. Bass 8 Mid 3-4 Treble 7. A flanger set to slow sweep with regen 6 should sound close enough.

gee, thats a great idea if i had post gain on my amp...

basically my amp has two channels

one channel

bass, mid, treble, volume (if u crank the volume u can dirty up the clean channel reaaaal nice.. thats how i leave it usually )

gain channel :
tone, gain, volume

masters:

master volume, reverb

^^ on a tube amp crank the master volume all the way up and use the volume on the gain channel to control volume level not master. Turn the gain all the way up and adjust tone so its treble and bass happy with scooped down mids. Run the flanger into it slow sweep mid/deep regen. That should do it if your amp has any kind of decent distoriton. The key to the brown sound is overdriving the output tube EL34 or 6L6 with the Amps master volume knob instead of the 12AX7 pre amp tube with the channels volume knob.

I dont know if using the channels volume pot or the amps mster volume pot will make a difference on whatever brands solid state amps, sorry. ALot of distorion and the flanger should get you through the song though.
