I'm starting to work on my technique a lot to finally get myself up to shred speed, so I'm being extra careful now to make sure I only develop good habits. I've been looking closely at some of the standard guys (Vai, Gilbert, Petrucci etc....) and I've noticed that all of them seem to keep their right thumb rigid and almost perpendicular to the strings as they pick (no matter how I try I can't seem to get this angle). I also pick from the wrist but I'm finding that my thumb is more parallel to the strings, and bends a bit as I pick. I'm not picking by flicking my thumb, but it just seems to bend naturally as I pick. Is this something I should correct?
play whatever is the most comfortable to you, because how would you play fast if youre uncomfortably straining the whole time? do whatever flows.
