It's a Big Muff.

Or it might be his Big Muff and DS-2 at the same time, but the Muff will do the sound better.

Kind of related: on the live at Slane DVD, in throw away your television he turns on this weird effect in the solo of Throw Away Your Television? anyone know what it is?

I once had a Zoom multieffect had something similiar in it, I think it was under the harmonizer function as "random mode" or something like that.

It was on a zoom called 'step', I had it.

Its on the line 6 FM-4, its the obi wah setting. very nice. ^^

Lol, I had that type of sound too on my Zoom^^^

I think it's some kind of Line 6 (or something else) filter modulator mumbo-jumbo pedal.

The effect is called an arpeggiator, i think, but i'm not 100%. Xotic make one, but i think John might use the model on his Line6 Modulator, like R_H_C_P said
