hows it goin guys and gals, just came accross this site looking for input for rebuilding my ESP. looks like i hit what i was looking for

anyway, Ive got an ESP custom shop Horizon that im in the process of putting back together and ive run into two problems

1: i need to figure out the best way to remove superficial scratches in the clear coat, i figured some rubbing compound, but was wondering if there was anything better suited for guitars.

Picture

second:
P'ups, dual HB settup. im looking for any input here, i want to have something in the bridge that i can get a good overdrive from (not death metal, but good hot gain would be nice) and something that i can get a nice clean warm sound from at the neck. thats about all, oh, it would be nice to keep the cost down, so keep that in mind

overall pic: its sad i know, cant wait to get this one back together and rip again

I like it actually. I'm not much into repairing guitars, but as for the pickups: I stand firmly by EMG's. Not that Duncan's or DiMarzio's would be a problem or anything, but active EMG's are fantastic from the sets I've used. Most metal people with custom gutiars advertize EMG 81/85 set, but I actually like either two 85's, or two 81's. That way the high end won't cut your head off when you go to solo. Mick Thompson from Slipknot uses 81/60 in his new custom Ibanez, which when I read the specs, sounds nice. Just go to www.emgpickups.com, and after doing a little reading and sound sampling you will find what you are looking for.
mmmmmmhmmm

That's exactly what I've been trying to say.

Oh ****ing hell :O

Who did you piss off that they would key your guitar? That's nasty. I'd say Gibson's touch-up pens, but i think they're only for Gibsons.

You DO have a beautiful guitar though, i love the finish.

People don't like Dave Mustaine because he created something that owned Metallica in just about every single aspect of thrash metal.

it's true

Rubbing compound could take it out. But you may need to try and sand it out and rebuff that section. And for a hot gain, you could take a look at stuff liek a dimarzio tone zone or something, but emgs could work if you don't mind having a death metal sound at your disposal.

thats a sexy guitar. very sexy. how'd you scratch it?
i'll join the herd. emgs sound good.

eh, ive had it since i was about 15 and at that time i was all about covering as much of the body with stickers as possible, and i think i ended up cutting a sticker out on the body. (yeah, id shoot myself for it if i could) and then tried to get a distinct tone by ripping out the neck pup and using the switch as a mute, it worked, but now i just want a clean all around guitar.

i switched to playing bass about 2 years ago and recently started playing with another band that calls for me to play guitar and i decided rather than drop cash on another instrument id just fix this one up and make it the workhorse it once was

You put stickers all over an ESP Custom Shop Horizon? You are crazy. . .

What is your budget for the two pickups? If you've got money, I would look into WCR and Bareknuckles. They're so much better than EMG's, if you ask me. I just don't like the active sound.
#9
Not too hard to fix at all. Get some very fine grade sandpaper, around 1000-2000 grit. Sand it down around the area, but be sure not to leave any gouges. Then fit a buffing pad to an electric drill, and use 3m buffing compounds to make it all nice and shiny.

like i said, i was young and F'ing stupid.

and i would like to keep the price for both pups as close to 150.00ish as possible. Ive got a lot to replace on this beast, so is i can keep anything on the low side of cost i will. if spending a little extra will produce a noticably better sound i may splurge, but like im saying, id like to keep cost down

I went ahead and pulled the trigger last night on some DiMarzio Vintage Air Classics, so those are on their way, now i just need to decide how i want to wire it. I was thinking maybe a 5 way switch, having position 1 be the neck, 2 be the outer coils on both pickups, 3 be the inner coils on both, 4 be the bridge and 5 be a kill/mute position. Could i use just a run of the mill 5 way for this or would i need something specialized. also, what ohm pots would you reccomend for a dual HB, 250K + 500k or 2 500ks?

thanks guys and gals

i was told i would need to have a coil tap for that settup, and being a nood to guitar wiring, what the hell does that mean?
"insert witty somewhat racial, innapropriate, degrading comment here"
#15
Coil tap? Isn't that the thing where you push down the tone knob for extra power?
#16
It shoudl be possible. I'm not that great at electrics, so wait for either pink queen or jim plays guitar, they shoudl help you.

And a coil tap is where you only turn on on coil in the humbucker, so it sounds almost like a single coil.

Extra power?

A coil tap just splits the humbucker, so only one side is working, giving it more of a single coil sound.

That seems like it would be possible. . .
#18
^No, a coil tap is a cut in the coil, to make the coil longer/shorter. You're talking coil split.

^ Do I have some wierd cult that tells everyone how great I am!???

GFS pickups are said to be excellent for the price, but I dunno how good they actually are. Look nice, I'm considering picking up a few.

You want hot gain but your not into metel. I'd say a Duncan Custom for the bridge. Then for the neck a Paf Pro. Good for soloing and has decent cleans. If you need good cleans a pearly gates. Still good for soloing with better cleans.
#24
i already got the pickups for it, im now more curious about how to wire them up

and yeah, just tell us when to drink the punch

update..(no one cares i know)

but the guitar is getting settup as we speak, i did all the wiring but theres only one person i trust to settup my guitars. anyway, pictures will be up as soon as i get it back, but heres waht its got now

DiMarzio Air Classics Neck and DiMarzio Air Classic Brigde. (DP-190 and DP-191). wired to a 5 way multipole switch. setting 1 being the neck, 2 being the outter-most coil of either pickup together, 3 being both pups, 4 being the inner-most coil of either pup, and 5 being the bridge. I may look into putting some mini toggles for going in and out of phase, but we'll see

What I did...or am attempting to do in my guitar is to have a 3-way switch for neck-both-bridge, push-pull pots for a coil split, and a separate kill switch. (I also have some stuff regarding the middle single coil, but you don't really have to worry about that). I have the wiring diagram that somebody (JimPlaysGuitar I think) made me, and I think all you'd have to do is ignore the single coil. If you want it, I can link it to you.
#28
thats similar to my settup the only differece being that my 2 and 4 settings are basically two of your coil taps put together, i got a bug yesterday telling me to maybe throw push pulls on it for putting things out of phase though..... tasty....

by the way, what guitar did you have that wiring in?

Correcto-mundo... But most people use the words tap and split interchangably because you rarely see a true tap (I believe the Bare Knuckle Mississippi Queen has one.)

Oh and BTW the Air Classics are really nice pickups for the price, quite underated IMO.
