why is an epi les paul so much more expensive than a g-400?
and whats the real tonal difference in a les paul and sg?

I came up with this kick ass riff on my ukelele when I was 12. Find out two years later, it was smoke on the water. Got my hopes and dreams killed..

pick them up, you will feel the difference. the Les paul has longer sustain because it has denser wood.

different woods, i believe an sg is all mahogony, or all maple im not sure, while a paul has a mahogony body and a maple cap

You're joking right?

EPIPHONE!! The only Epiphones with Maple caps are the Elitists!! The big difference, is that the Les Paul uses more wood since it's thicker and larger than the SG. There's your price difference.

^Also, the Epi LP's that aren't elitists are mainly built with alder for the bodies. Or alder around a mahogany center. The "maple top" is actually just a thin veneer to make it look pretty.

As for the difference between the two;
The SG uses less wood and is easier to make, while the LP takes more wood and is a little harder to make. That's about it.

I don't know what the body wood for Epi SG's is, so I'll edit after I find out. I'd assume that it's mahogany for the mid-higher end models.

EDIT: Body woods for epi SGs

SG Special: laminated alder/maple body
G-310: Alder
G-400: Mahogany
G-400 Custom: Mahogany
G-400 Deluxe: Mahogany w/flame maple top (probably veneer)
G-1275: Alder with curly maple veneer
