I noticed that there are no deathrock bands in the UG Punk Band List thread (except TSOL), so I decided to make a thread to see if anyone besides me is a deathrock fan.

In case you didn't know...

Deathrock is pretty much just punk with a goth rock influence and lyrics that refer to death and horror a lot. A good example of a deathrock song is Black Cross by 45 Grave.

Here are some deathrock/Batcave (UK deathrock) bands/artists (you might recognize some of the bands):

Christian Death
45 Grave
Specimen
Alien Sex Fiend
Sex Gang Children
T.S.O.L
Voodoo Church
The Flesh Eaters
Penis Flytrap
Theater of Ice
Castration Squad
Dinah Cancer
Rozz Williams
Eva O and Her Guns
Gitane Demone
Cinema Strange
Shadow Project
Bella Morte (well, their Deathrock EP)
Kommunity FK
Skeletal Family
Super Heroines
Kastle Grey Skull
Gun Club
Burning Image
Deadfly Ensemble

I like Christian Death, 45 Grave, and Alien Sex Fiend.

And I like your screenname, btw. *winks*

EDIT: However, I do not have any proper albums from those bands. Could you possibly recommend me the best CDs from Xtian Death, 45, and ASF?

Thanks. It's sort of a cliche, but Spiritual Cramp was my first deathrock song.

Sure.

In my opinion, the best Christian Death CDs would be Only Theatre of Pain, Catastrophe Ballet, and The Iron Mask. The Deathclub: 1981 - 1993 CD was pretty good, since it was a collection of Christian Death's best songs (although Spiritual Cramp and Figurative Theatre weren't on there!!!).

For 45 Grave, Sleep in Safety and Only the Good Die Young are my favorites.

Alien Sex Fiend is one of the few deathrock bands that I don't like very much. I find a lot of their songs boring. I only own The Singles: 1983 - 1995 album.

I like deathrock a lot but it doesn't get talked about much here. My favorites are 45 Grave, Gun Club, and the Flesh Eaters, and T.S.O.L. I do, however, need to say that I can't stand what I've heard of Christian Death. I hate Rozz Williams' voice.
#5
Although I love Rozz (RIP) to death, I do understand why you can hate his voice. Unlike most deathrock frontmen/women, Rozz was more influenced by glam rock than punk. He loved Bowie, and I read somewhere that two of his favorite bands were KISS and Alice Cooper.

In Only Theatre of Pain, Rozz wasn't actually singing. He was actually just moaning and groaning the entire album, which made Christian Death even more diverse. I bet if you listened to his vocals live on the DeathClub: 1981 - 1993 DVD, you would like them more, since he was actually singing. He has a beautiful voice when he isn't moaning like a cheap prostitute (although I still like the cheap prostitute sound too).

EDIT: Try listening to Static Jesus or Days of Glory or something by Shadow Project. Rozz actually sings in Shadow Project, and is accompanied by his (now widowed) wife Eva O.

I've only heard Only Theatre of Pain, so that's where my opinion comes from. But I'll listen to other stuff to see if I like it better.

I forgot about Burning Image. I like them too.
#7
Yeah, OTOP turns a lot of people off of Christian Death. I reccomend listening to Spectres. Rozz actually sings, but still has that tiny drop of his OTOP vocals in it.

The Doctors of Madness were doing the death rock thing before there was a word for it, as were the Damned.
X kinda got into it, as well.

Blame it all on Screaming Jay Hawkins, cuz he put a spell on you.
#10
^He kinda....you know, explained it in his first post.

Thanks for the recommendations, Spiritual_Cramp.

On another note, Rozz's vocals are awesome........that includes the few songs I've heard off OTOP.

I love 45 Grave and TSOL. I have a friend who's really into Death Rock and Goth and all that good stuff. He's always listening to that stuff in his car and I really like a lot of it. From what I've heard of Christian Death, Specimen, Alien Sex Fiend, and others, I like it a lot. It's just hard to find any of their records around here.
#13
Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I MUST know ANY info about Rikk Agnew's rig on Only Theatre of Pain. Anyone?

Btw, Bloody Dead and Sexy are a great example of a contemporary deathrock band.

Deathrock is a bit too nerdy for my likings. It's good fun, but is just made up fantasy $$$$.

I prefer dungeons and dragons.

The story behind party time was funny though.

^Lol true.

I don't have much, I can't find OToP anywhere here for now, and since it's supposed to be a classic I'd rather have it bought than d/led. I have Alien Sex Fiend's Acid Bath album and I love that one.... I think I need some EST, trip to the moon!

I also have 45 Grave's Sleep For Safety, and the Return of the Living Dead soundtrack on my hard drive.

Btw, where does death-rock end and Goth begin, and vice versa? Because IMO Siouxsie and the Banshees's first album and Bauhaus' first two albums have a death-rock sensibility.
#18
Deathrock has a lot more punk-influence than goth rock does, though goth rock still has some.

Deathrock (minus certain bands, with some of Christian Death/Rozz Williams' work included) also is more upbeat and less gloomy than goth rock.

But yeah, I agree that some Bauhaus is deathrock-ish. Dark Entries, IMO, is one of their more upbeat songs, and I consider it more deathrock than goth.

If you want a good example to see the difference, listen to Black Cross by 45 Grave, then listen to Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus.

EDIT: Raise_the_dead, if you find the need to DL OToP, make sure you DL the song "Figurative Theater (or Theatre, whatever)". The best song on the album, IMO.

Yeah, I definitely see where you're coming from. There's like two schools to Goth rock: the crazy, manic, far-out, eccentric Batcave stuff, which essentially is death rock, and then there's the bleak, depressing, sepulchral stuff like the Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division.

I'll check that song out. Btw, I like Christian Death's Church of No Return a lot, even though it isn't Rozz Williams. It's just a fantastic song.

Btw anyone know the March Violets? Check out Walk in the Sun, one of the best songs ever.

I can't find OTOP anywhere, I think it's out of print. It's one of the few albums I have downlaoded for free without actually buying. I can send it to you on MSN if you want.

Well you can get it on Amazon and I found it on eBay too, but I don't know where you're from so I don't know if you can get it. Besides that, I already know a few download places, so thanks. But really, go online, you can get it for pretty cheap.

As a generalisation, anarchists tend to have a somewhat misguided idea of socialism.

And on topic, I don't like death rock.

Isn't Rudimentary Peni considered somewhat Deathrock? I like them a lot.

Hmm, deathrock what a silly name for a genre.

Anyway from that list I like.

The Flesh Eaters and The Gun Club

And Rudimentary Peni, surely they must be classed as death rock. They are pretty damn gloomy and punk.

It didn't fail, because its still going on today. Theres heroin, gangs and shootings in rohnert park, so i guess that doesnt work either. The shootings came from gangs that weren't from there, they were from copenhagen. overall it is a peaceful place

Accually buddy those are isolated events. And thats much better than America seeing as more than 300,000 people a year are shot and killed on the streets.

i don't care, my point is nothing can be perfect. and thats just a town with 800 people in it. are you trying to tell me that a whole country would be better off with no government? no authority? are you trying to tell me you want millions of people running around doing whatever they want? if you want to escape your life and run to a small village, then do so. have fun with that. but either way, no matter what you do, the past and most of all, REALITY, will catch up with you. The same thing happend to that free town place. they had to get police authority to help the probelm with drugs and gangs. thats NOT anarchy. see what i mean? it may be working great, but is not anarchy. or not true anarchy at least.

oh yeah and by the way, ameirca does not have 300,000 murders a year, its usually around 15,000. i don't know who put that crap in your head.

yeah, trying to fool yourself into thinking anarchy could ever happen, with the way people are, is just delusional. even jello biafra thinks so, he just calls himself a "social anarchist", whatever the hell that means...

I bought Only Theatre Of Pain for like 3 dollars on half.com, some of it's awesome, some is okay, most of it's a little depressing. TSOL and 45 Grave are pretty good too, but the Adolescents blow everything else out of the water

Dungeons and Dragons is actually pretty cool, you just need a good dungeon master, like BrianApocalypse.

With the Skulf, the rules and story tend to be a little off the roof.
