Alder : bright

Basswood: slightly more midrangey, a very "sweet" sound

what about mahogany?

a warm darker type sound... you know how Les Pauls sound.
It also might be noted that mahogany is also heavier than both alder and basswood so its got that great sustain.

they're all good in the range. The only huge differences are the pickups (which you'd want to change in the end in any case since even the Dimarzio Ibanez ones aren't anything special... so you might as well go for the cheaper one regarding that) and the finishes (which is up to your opinion on what looks cool...)
