OK, somehow I got roped into painting my friend's strat. Now instead of making it easy on me, he wants it "painted" like EVH's Charvel/Strat with white and black stripes. I have painted two guitars with solid colors but never with stripes and I cant cheat my way out of it by painting it white and puting black tape on it. He wants it so you dont feel any lines from the masking tape. I think the way it should be done is by painting it black and tape lines across it then painting it white. Is this the way to do it or am I going to be screwed.
I must get it to look like this.

easy, paint it black> put tape on it> paint it white> remove tape> clearcoat.

on a topic of how you would like to be buried...

Here's my idea. Paint the whole body the color of the stripes (black), then put tape (make sure it won't damage the coat) where the stripes go and paint the background color (white). Then remove the tape. Voila.

Exactly what I wanted to say, I always wanted to do it too but with the red, black and white stripes, but I gotta save money for a Mesa Rectoverb. Good luck for your project and I recommend you to do as Blink said.

BlinkrOck! is right, I've painted a lot of things in the VH style, and that's the procedure that I always go through, but I've never painted a guitar, I usually make things like straps and belt buckles.

Well, first work out how much the supplies are going to cost you. And presume you'll need more than you think, because you can never have too many supplies.

Then work out standard rate, and how long it'll take for you to do the job.

Then work out how much you should be charging your friend.

But yes, why would you think about putting black tape onto the guitar in the first place? It's obviously done with masking.

Black - tape - white - finish - finish - finish - finish.

How much will the paint cost?

And how many cans of lacquer does it take to paint a guitar?

I always use one can of primer, 4 of color, and 3 clear.

So 8 cans of lacquer per guitar, at $4 per guitar.

So basically, your material costs are going to be at least $32.

Possibly more, considering you'll need tape too :p

But let's say $35 on materials.

So you're not charging labour?

What the other guys have said is correct. Just be carefull, and patient, and it will come out great. Why not "relic" it also for the cool mojo vibe??
