I want to start recording using a laptop - can anyone recommend any good recording software?

Can I get a really good sounding recording using this (ie. studio type quality) or would I need to purchase some kine of recording equipment?

You'll need an interface too...

Tracktion is my favorite program...you can find it at www.tracktion.com

I use a Presonus Firebox as an interface, with a Behringer submixer for the drums. Then I have a bunch of mics. Expect to pay at least 300 bucks for any decent recording(that's guitar only, 450 if you want drums and bass and vox.)

yeah ive got audacity and with just a computer mic (i think mine was around $20Aus) you can get some decent-quality recordings. It lets you multi-track and play around with all sorts of effects including reverb, wah etc...
