Lower the action to just above where you get string buzz.
Raise the pickups to just below where you get muddy tone due to interference.

Instead of buying new parts, you could have the pickups re-wax potted. Clean the elctronics really good. And replace the strings. But then if you still dont have the right sound, buy new stuff...;-)

Put the action as high as you can still play. It's worth making playing harder for better tone and sustain.

Big, fat heavy strings are your friend, and there's no simpler 'mod'. Harder to play, yes, but also better in every conceivable way. SRV, Jimi Hendrix and Dick Dale all used really heavy strings with high action, so there you go.
Feel free to ignore my ranting.

A recent study shows that 8% of teenagers listen to nothing but music with guitars in it. Put this in your sig if you're one of the 92% who isn't a close-minded moron.

yeah, but Jimmy Page, Steve Vai, and Eddie Van Halen all use light strings with low action. so it's really a preference thing.

*edit*
forgot my contribution to the actual topic: putting a capacitor across the outer terminals of a volume pot will prevent treble loss as you roll back the volume.
Signatures are for posers.

oh wait, that's a signature.

dammit.
