My guitar teacher is selling his 1976 sunburst colored gibsom les paul custom for $2500, a he said he'll take $500 off. I've tried to buy this guitar, but my parents won't let me because they say that I'm not a good enough player (a little more than 2 years), or that it's a bad deal. The guitar is in near perfect condition with the most amazing tone I've ever heard out of a guitar, I can carry it just fine (apparently some people complain about it's weight), and I've almost raised enough money for it, 1 more week of work and I'll have made enough. So is this a good deal, or should I shop around for a better one? I play alot of music, mainly blues style rock like Zeppelin and Clapton. And please, no one say get a jackson or ESP.

Hm..check the value for it. Look on Ebay and look in a guitar values book. If it's worth that much, and you love the sound and feel of it, go for it.

If it's not worth that much, however, show him proof and haggle him down. I somehow doubt that it's worth $3000. Maybe $2000...but not $3000.

Check the value before you do anything else. If it is worth that much you can at least get your money back if you want to resell it.

EDIT: Here's the closest thing I could find on Ebay.

I believe that a Black Beauty Custom costs more than a regular custom...I'm not positive though.

^He said he'd get it for $2500-that's with his guitar teacher taking $500 off. $2500+$500=$3000.

Cheapest I can get for the same guitar in similar condition is about $20 less off of ebay, and trust me, I will NEVER buy a guitar without testing it. So ebay isn't an option. 20% chance of it breaking the second I touch it. So I guess I'll show this to my parents and try to get them to let me buy it. And xenn, I said he would take $500 off of $2500, which does in fact equal $2000.

According to the 2005 Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide a 1976 Les Paul Custom is worth $1500-$2000. You could probably find a real good Gibson for less money.

Haggle him down a bit.
But really, do you need this guitar?
C'mon, that amp won't exactly "compliment" the guitar now, will it?

I'm with <R H C P> on this one... why have a $2000 guitar when you only have a crappy Squier amp? It would make far more sense, to me, to get a decent new amp before you get some kind of amazing guitar like this one.

I think it would be overkill. Try some different Les Pauls* and compare them. A customshop guitar from Gibson is a guitar for life, but still...

*Gibson, NOT Epiphone. I like the Stadard and Classic a lot, but it's up to you of course.

$2000 sounds like top price, he isn't exactly giving a great deal. i'd give it a miss.

Too expensive. And a new amp would be of far greater use to you than a new guitar. Running a Les Paul Custom through a Squier amp is like fitting a lawn mower engine in your Ferarri.

ive seen LP customs go for 1500 used in Guitar Centers, and things of that nature.

Granted the '76 makes it a collectors, if i were to spend THAT much, it would have to be on a silverburst

well since its that old you can probably sell it for a profit in a few years...

the value of old les pauls seem to just go up and up...regardless of how crappy they were when produced (70's les pauls = not the best)

You could get the Hughes & Ketnner Martix 100 head and cabinet ($800) then the rest to buy on a decent guitar.

Should you buy it? You decide.

If you feel a $2,000 guitar is going to be your next big investment, and that it fits your musical tastes best, then go for it .

Though personally, I'd get a better amp and an SG with $2,000 .

It makes sense to buy a kickass amp but when you do find the guitar that you love .... tone, feel, looks, etc. buying an amp later becomes easier to justify.

It's not like when you postpone buying an amazing amp you'll somehow, in the future, go: "Gosh darn it to heck, I should've bought that amp!"

With a guitar that you absolutely love, it'll be huge regrets if you pass up the chance.

I've played the Switchblade... it blows big time. Just horrible tone. I was expecting to be amazed, but to be honest? I liked the the Edition Blue more.
