I'm trying to give my guitar a new look but can't find the right paint type.

Or duplicolor paints avail at most one stop shop stores, (fred Meyers, walmart). but almost any type of paitn will work, as on electric guitars the paint type doesn't effect tone as much as other instruments.
It really depends on the wood that you're using. I just finished a flat top that I laminated with zebra wood. It looks great, but you'd better not want any color because the wood is so damn hard that it won't take dye or stain.

My current project uses lacewood, which is softer, but the wood patterns do weird things with stain.

I would only use Stewart-MacDonald lacquer to finish your guitar with and only use water-based

Here is a picture of my zebra.
