just wondering what exactly a boost does? i mean is it just volume, or is it like a mini overdrive, or what? thanks for teh clarification

Boost is another word for overdrive or distortion, if it's a knob it's usually distortion, if it's a button or switch it's most likely overdrive.

usullly boost means that someone gets an overdrive pedal and puts it on their tube amp because it doesnt have enough distortion, so the pedal "boosts" it by giving more gain

basically, a boost doesn't do any distortion or clipping by itself, it just increases the signal so that in the amp it distorts

theres a lot of boosts. Regular boost just boosts the signal. Theres also treble boost, mid boost, bass boost, and full range boost. Im hoping you can imagine what these do by their names.
