March of the Fire Ants is a good song. Very heavy, and it's tuned to A. Other than that, I like the song Megalodon. But I can't really seem get into their other songs. Maybe it's because I don't really like the drunken sailor vocals.

Kind of A, not exactly, it's (low to high) A,G,C,F,A,D, so technically, it's "Drop A", as Zakk Wylde calls it.

I love that tuning though

mastodon is one of the more interesting new bands to come out. i love the drumming by brann dailor, remission was an excellent album. but was i the only one dissapointed with leviathan? it just seemed watered down compared to their earlier work.
#125
im going to see them live 19 august =)

Progressive sludge? Bahaha

What's funny about it? That is Mastodon's genre.
#128
Yeah, a lot of sludge is written in the same time signature as Meshugga or Necrophagist. ;p

They're far too fast to be a sludgy band. And I don't see anything really progressive about them. Basic gothenburg styled harmonization, some soling, meh.

Ok, listen to Mastodon then listen to bands like Crowbar and Isis. You can clearly hear that Mastodon is Sludge.
#131
sludge is slow like DOWN,

mastodon and slow don't go in the same sentence Bran Dailor's drumming is insane

You are thinking Stoner. Down has some elements of Stoner also.

So, yes Mastodon are Prog Sludge.
#134

i don't really like more than a few Mastodon songs, but i have to say, they put on one helluva show at the Unholy Alliance concert i went to. i thoroughly enjoyed their set. especially when they played Blood and Thunder at the end. that song's badass.
#136
Wow it really sucks ass that they're not coming to the Uk for the Unholy alliance tour

I really need to see them live...
#137

So I listened to the new songs on their Myspace, and for "Capillarian Crest", is there someone doing guest vocals?

I also heard that Cedric from the Mars Volta would be appearing on the album... any other guest appearances?

Who does the higher screaming? Brent?

Bill's singing. If you go to their myspace, and then go to the blog posted as "CAPILLARIAN CREST VIDEO", the video has Bill singing.

I've got a chance to see them Oct. 7, but I don't know if I can, I might be too young.

EDIT: Fun Fact- Mastodon only lives about 20 minutes from me. Their Myspace says Atlanta, but bands put the more recognisable city on those. They are actually from Douglasville, about 50 miles or less from ATL. Pretty cool huh?

you gonna pay em a visit when they arent touring or are in town for some reason? lol

I've heard a few songs by them. Their riffs are pretty awesome as well as the drumming. So far, Seabeast, Fire Ants and Aqua Demetria have caught my eye. I also enjoyed their rendition of Orion, blew me away.

I loved the Orion cover too. They did great, They never slipped on timing or screwed up the solos or anything, I really liked it. Most bands try and be all cool and add their own solos, but I like it when the person plays the artist's solo, because the solo the band puts in is usually worse.

I don't like that funny tuning they use, full step down while the E is four steps or w/e lol
#145
I can't wait for the new album, i think it's going to be great.
They're quite underrated, especially songs like seabeast.

The Encyclopaedia Metallum classifies them as progressive sludge metal, but this is not widely accepted
