I don't currently own an Ibanez but I am thinking of getting a SR500 for my next bass. Is this a good bass for metal and hard rock? Thanks guys

Steve, that neck is massive ! surely your fingering is hampered severely? it looks really awkward in the primate picture above.. what's the width of it?
#9
^The neck isn't that big compared to most 6 strings...

that's Warwick for you.

I own an Ibanez SR505. I will get pictures up EVENTUALLY. (along with the rest of my gear). When I get on my computer, I'll post a soundclip here.

My story is pretty simple. I went to Guitar Center with the money to buy a Warwick Corvette (never go to GC to buy any Warwick). The Warwick I had in mind actually wasn't a bad one, compared to most of the ones Guitar Center carries. All it needed was a nice set up and some love. The strings were completely dead, and the sales guy said he'd put a new pair on for free. While he was in back putting on a new set, I was test driving some other basses. The Ibanez' natural wood color attracted me immediatly and I sat down with it. After a very slight EQ adjustment, I was able to match the tone of the Warwick (a $1399 bass). With a bit more tweaking, I could get an even better tone. I was suprised, because I had heard many people flaming Ibanez SR basses. I thought it might be an extremely expensive Ibanez. When I looked at the price tag I was astonished. A mere $550. I asked the sales man when he returned, and I asked him what gives? He checked the price and told me it was correct, and said he was surprised as well. (Guitar Center had two SR505's on display at the time, and he told me he had test driven the other one).

I feel I got lucky with my bass. I have never played another Ibanez that sounds like mine. It weighs less than my Squire and my guitarist's GSR200. The tone is magnificant and I love every bit of it to death. Eventually I'll end up getting a "high end" bass, but I dont really need anything else right now.

My only two complaints are these: first off, the wood scratches fairly easily. When I get picks of mine up, I have dug holes under the G and D strings, and beneath the neck pickup (my prefered thumb rest). Also, the pickup selector knob is too close to the bridge, making it difficult to palm mute.

People dont' see the beauty of Ibanez basses. They play the low end ones, like the GSR200, and compare it to things like American Fender Jazz basses. If you are reading this thread and still don't see the beauty of Ibanez, read up some more here:

EDIT: Soundclip!!!
A little something I like to call my Musicman Tone (except I don't have a quiet G string)
Playing the chorus riff to Mr. Bungle's Mr. Nice Guy (off the OU818 demo)

and please ignore the high pitched hiss. It's my computer mic.

Actually... I have room for another two or so strings The fingering is super easy on it, and I have relatively short fingers.

Inky, that's a great soundclip. Similar story for mine, only mine was I found out the Awesome that is John Myung, and lusted for a 6-banger. I was at GC, and found a suprisingly large number of 6'ers. I played a bunch, including the BTB406. I wasn't feeling them as much, until I saw the SR506. Wow. From the 10-20 or so times i went to GC from Summer 05 to March 06, I played 506's and was impressed all the time. The most consistant bass in terms of quality, I believe.

I was going to order a 6 string Corvette from Samash, but decided on the 5 string and also I realized I should play it before dropping that much cash on it. (dont even ask me why I wanted to buy a bass from samash). My SR505 sounds much like Warwick Corvettes, the one Conklin I played, and those Modulus jazz basses. Most of the other ones i've played sound a lot like the Warwick Rockbasses or mexican/japanese Fender Jazz' (not that that's a bad thing).

Its just I feel theres something special about mine. I just can't pinpoint exactly what it is. It's probably just one of those things your mind makes you think.

I'd personally never buy anything ffrom Sam Ash... at least the one in Hollywood, CA. They bust your nuts if you play an instrment for more than 5 minutes if you don't plan on buying it. Even if it's a cheapo.
haha

Thats why when I go into an instrument store, I tell them "I'm looking to buy a new bass!" They get my name and number, but I never call them and they never call me.

I've been thinking about getting a 5 string Ibanez Ergodyne in the luthite body. Its got a hell of a sound. but I know that my 5 string will be an ibanez, whether its a BTB or an Ergodyne.

Primus, is that gig in a church? "Make His praise glorious", IMHO, is kinda...

Haha yeah, it used to be a church and now they rent out and lease the space for people to put on shows. It's referred to as the Quinsigamond Valley Community Center now, so I guess it's a community center, but with church banners still on it.

There used the be a sign on the other wall that said Pray Until Something Happens..... PUSH... get it? Neither do I...

o haha ai4281, didnt realize you were the threadstarter LMAO :P

well hmm i havnt played a BTB before, but i MAY want to think about it, because one of the faults im finding with my SR505, altho i thought at first i love the string spacing, i think i could use a little more space inbetween, for slappage and overrall playing. maybe sometime in the future we could chill out and try each other's basses lol.

I'm using an ATK that's my dad's. and I may get a BTB455 or whatever. a five string 35" scale bass with stain finish and quilt maple top.

also, do they sound good amplified? I tried my dad's BTB six-string many times, but not amplified.
#31
I dont have an ibanez yet but,i've been looking into an sr 300, there lookin decent, anyone played one?
#32
oh, there's an SR505 for sale in my newspaper for about $500CDN, would it be worth it to beg my parenmts to get it and me pay it off gradually, or **** it? I've tried out the four-string in a shop and it played well, but SR's tend to have floppy B's from what I've played.

or just save up and get another used bass?
#33
If it's a new model, I'd haggle w/ the seller. They sell new about 500 American.
haha

I'm getting a SR506 this august and i'd mad psyched to get it. I've played the 505 and i tried some other six-strings so i kinda get the idea.

Im only like 150$ away from the total amount wich is like about $820 canadian.

if you can haggle down to low 400's .. go for it i guess, if not, keep looking.
