Ok so i was just playing a scale and boom song so i go to record it and the rythem guitar part is all distorted on play back. Just when i play it back not when i record or before. I have a tascam 4 track tape recorder. How can i clean this up......

You want the peak levels just to reach bellow 0dB, hitting the yellows at max, and avoid hitting the reds whenever possible. Also make sure your cables are connected well and that one of them hasn't gone bad.
