Actually, they're designed by the customer - hence the name. They'll make just about anything you want as long as you have the money.
The custom shop does make limited edition retail guitars, however, usually of hard-to-find vintage gems like the Nocaster.

I have seen some actual custom Fender strats examples in their catalogs.
Overall, the mass produced custom shop guitars are just overpriced collectibles.

Agreed. And for the price you pay, you can find a local luthier and have them build a guitar to your specs that will be of MUCH higher quality.
