I've been recording lately with my reliable SM57,

but my tone is lacking in something,

im not to sure but it just sounds flat and lifeless.

I know its not my guitars or amp, and its not my pedals sucking it because i usually record it straight in the amp.

I've tried all different kinds of placements, but it just seems like its missing something.

Please tell me what i can do.

I've found that a lot of it is in the amp settings. For the most part, I find that the settings people use to practice or jam with a band generally don't sound good recorded, and recorded tones often don't work well in a live setting. It took me a while to figure this out in my early days of recording when I thought mic placement was key.

I'd suggest you try modifying your amp / effects settings somewhat to try to compensate. The live sound you'll hear might now be the ideal tone, but what the mic picks up inches away from the speaker usually sounds drastically different.

yea just play around with your EQ, i find that (assuming your into it) scooping your mids can actually lead to a lifeless tone, try adding some mids to the mix or some reverb or something, experiment around a bit
