I am having some trouble writing an intro for a hard rock song. I don't just want to play a bunch of power chords, but i'm getting desperate so help!

ya theory will help but to give you an idea a Power chord is a fifth a third is just a different interval it would be like holding the

5th fret E string and 3rd fret A string

A third can be either major or minor.

A major third is four frets, while a minor third is three frets.

So for a major third interval.

Eadgbe is the tuning.

Let's take 5th fret low E string. Four frets up from that would be 9th fret low E string, which is a C#. So you could play these two notes as 54xxxx.

For a minor third interval. Let's use the same note, 5th fret low E string. Three frets up from there would be 8th fret low E string, which is a C. You could play that as 53xxxx.

I hope that made sense.

Thanks for the idea with using thirds, I'll try using them.
