I posted these last week but the post was deleted because I was igonorant of the 2 recordings per week rule. It's a new week, here they are......

Both of them were done as part of an "FNJ" which is a Friday Night Jam, which is a cool thing that another guitar site I frequent does. Basically someone posts a backing track and the participants shred over it and post their takes. THese are mine.

Since I don't get paid for these and they are all in fun, I pretty much do them all as 1st take improvisations, slop and all preserved for all to hear. It's more about capturing a moment than perfecting a song with these 'net jams for me. These two both were done exactly that way. I try and find motives within each track from which to build melodies....

I must stress that my playing is usually a hell of a lot more melodic than this, but on these the style of the backing tracks said "mindless shred" to me....

Please check em out. I will gladly return the favor....

I like the intro riff of the first song. Your playing was very clean but not very interesting in the first song. Some part sounded a lil bit sloppy in speed picking and some parts just didnt sound like they fit.

The second song still had that same feel to me .... boring. you can play fast but it wasnt saying anything.

I like shred but this wasnt doing it for me. You obviously know these were wanky. I would like to here your more serious stuff. This song also sounded kinda repetitive.

Thanks for the crit by the way.

critting as i listen:

first song:

ok this isn't my style of music really but this is freakin awesome! tons of energy and well played.

solos just started in which also sound really good... really good tone on the lead

lead gets just a tad sloppy in a couple of really brief instances but catches itself rather quickly

song is getting kinda old now... very repetitve... try and spice it up and throw in some variation

overall very solid playing though and i enjoyed the first two thirds of it or so until i kinda got bored with it because it's repetitive

second song:

hahaha crap man this is complete insanity! once again i really like the backing rhythm

once again, the tone of both guitars is great

this lead is just nuts man, i'm an acoustic guitarist though so i don't listen to alot of stuff like this... this is impressing me

sounds really really sweet when the crazy fast lead slows down a tad to kinda harmonize over the background rhythm

seriously these are both freakin cool. where my friends and i practice there are about 15 or so bands of similar style that all play within earshot so we are constantly having to listen to this style of music played really really badly. you're 100 times better than any of those guys, i enjoyed these.

crit 4 crit?

is almost satriani-like... which is a good thing.
First song, I like it, the drums go very well with it. good driving tempo

second song, the lead seems a little bit off in the first few seconds, but then gets right back on track and proceeds to rock... awesome song

you're obvioulsy a very skilled guitarist. The solos were great but there was no melody. The intro riff was good but a little redundant and predictable. Overall it was a good song. If you put some melody in with your talent you'd have an excellent song

crit 4 crit?

my songs are on guitar pro 4 so dont worry about it if you dont have the software.
but id appreciate a crit.

1st song: Pretty cool. Not immensely interesting, but it sounds good. Nice playing, of course

2nd song: Cool as well. I def see the Satriani vibe, both in style and even tone. Though, I agree that more structured melody would greatly benefit both songs.

Good playing though =)

Just a brief response.... these were not songs but improvised guitar solos. Frist take, sloppy of course, but sometimes for me improv is more about the vibe than anything else..... If I edit or fix the sloppy parts, then it blows the whole "do it in one take and call it done" philosophy which I love so much. Long ago a great and well known jazz player told me "if ya play it more than once in the session to get it right, that aint jazz, that's practice". I live by that now. I am however about to create a series of Prog works with my Prog/Fusion band. Those will be written and improvised both....

They were the least melodic things I have ever put to tape. Howevr, forum rules prohibit me from posting more than 2 a week so I cannot put any more up til next week. I do already have a post on here from last week with some mellow, melodic stuff.

Ok, listened both of them. Most of the fast licks weren't 100% clean or just sounded out of place. So, I suggest slowing down a notch or relearning your technique a bit. Also, try to give more thought to your playing. Work on phrasing and making the licks more interesting. Keep it up!

listenign as i type. wow im impressed. Deff some awesome shredding going on! not only that but ur tone sounds pretty darn good as well! thats some fasts hit man! good job, only thing i have to critisize is that at times it sounds a little random but awesome job!

I felt it was pretty good, especially for improv. Way better than my improv stuff. I felt you abused the whammy bar buzz a little though. I never thought it sounded good to begin with, and you used it a few times.
Overall, I think the second song was better, mainly because you had a main melodic theme to return to and expound upon. In the first track, all I heard was a drum beat and your solo. I prefer to hear a little more backing music than that. Still, it was good stuff.

Good job, you are pretty fast, however, some of it sounded like pure wankery. Some stuff just sounded like you were being completely random, but other stuff sounded thought out and serious. You're pretty good.
