I need a guitar AND an amp, but i can get by on my little crate practice amp for a little longer, if I have too. So....I need a guitar that would be good for progressive/psych rock. It would be nice to have a little sustain, as I play rythym guitar for the band. But I also have to shred at times, so....can I have some suggestions?

buy an ibanez rg 1570, i think its 749$ usd. so you'll have 250 left to get/save for another amp.
#3
I think a Gibson SG runs around 800$, not one-hundred percent positive though....

depending on your style, you could get a used eclipse, or a used shecter C7 hellraiser for about 500 bucks.

With the other 400-500, you could get a decent amp

Amen.

You probably need a good amp more than a good guitar though, as amps are about 75% of your tone. With that kind of money though, you could go for a $500-$600 amp and a $400 or so guitar.

i would say since those guitars are particularly bad arse, i would save up an extra 100 on the amp. I think if you went under that in the guitar department, you'd be sacraficing feel and comfort

what amp do you reccomend?

alright

i suggest looking into a nice used tube amp, maybe a fender hotrod. alrthough for higher, gain, youd need to get yourself a distortion pedal.
Gear:
PRS Custom SE
Shit Strat
line6 spider II 112 (worst choice of my life)
Squier 10 watt (sounds better than the spider)
Digitech rp200
Rocktron Silver Dragon

get a vox valvetronix 30 watt
My Gear-
Gibson SG Junior
52' Hot Rod Tele
American Deluxe Strat
Yamaha Cg-104
Fender Twin (white)
Boss CH1
Boss OC-3
DOD overdrive
Fulltone OCD
Arbiter Fuzz Face
Vox Wah
BBE Sonic Stomp
Dunlop Univibe

^^ He said he played experimental, progressive, and post/hardcore. Thats not jthe typical genre's for a hotrod. Also, you wouldn't use a distortion pedal on a tube amp, I'd recomend getting a Tube screamer or somthign to push it into the high gain setting you want. I would recomend a Traynor YCV40.

All tube and with a overdrive pedal this can get into metal territory, and since you play borderline metal this would be perfect.

I think he should also check out some laneys, they seem like they'd fit him well.

I'm a huge fan of the new epiphone amps...though you'd need a pedal.
(epiphone firefly 30 and the epi triggerman 60)

^^ Ive never tried an epi amp, but I wouldn't feel comfortable spending good money ( Im poor ) on an amp that are from a company that for the most part has QC issues. And this is what they make the most, amps are just somthing they are trying out so I assume there would be more QC issues.

Just my 2 cents

get a marshall dsl combo....Solved. Marshall is one of the most versatile amp for any sound...... god damn lol making things complicated. But if you swear to metal...., get a engl screamer.

like he said, if you do get a tube amp, get an overdrive pedal not a distortion pedal

overdrive=tube and distortion=solid state

Give 10 UGers a rope and ask them to pull. 4 will push, 1 will ask for buttsecks, 2 will tell you get an Ibanez and the last 3 will start complaining about Line6 Spiders.

You just need to go to a store and check out all the amps and guitars in there, and find out which you like best.

Here's some reccomendations as to what you could check out though

Randall RG50TC for the amp, its 560 USD at musiciansfriend. Here's the link:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Randall-RG50TC-50W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp?sku=481197

And Fender standard stratocaster HSS (fat strat) for the guitar. Here's the link:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-Standard-HSS-Stratocaster-Electric-Guitar?sku=516039

This runs about a hundred bucks above your budget, if you can manage to scrape it together

The amp is a very good rock amp, but it won't do cleans too well. If you need the cleans, you have the fender hot rod deluxe, which is 40 dollars more than the randall.

The guitar is very versatile, and its has a very good playability.

In your case, it'd be better spending more "bling bling" (I can't actually believe i just said that) on your amp than your guitar, since the amp is more crucial for your tone

schecter c-1 hellraiser FR. original floyd rose bridge, emg pups, and grover tuners. can't go wrong, its only $800.

I played through the Randall and A/B-ed it right next to a marshall DSL40 (which has been suggested earlier on in this thread).. Must say I liked the Marshall MUCH better, much warmer and more responsive...

Hope it helps a bit
