If you look at the heritage cherry on the Gibson SG Standard you can still kind of see the wood grain. I have painted a guitar before and I was wondering if you had to do anything different to be able to see the wood grain.

Yeah use a wood dye isntead of a paint. The painting process can be a slight bit different dependign what base dye you use.
