you play them with the raised 6th/7th going up, but going down you do them without, as a normal minor scale, or is it just the melodic that you play as a normal minor descending? i asked my sister and she thought it was just melodic, but from what i remember i thought it was harmonic too?

melodic is 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7 8 b7 b6 5 4 b3 2 1 <- 6 and 7 raised going up then lowered coming down
harmonic is 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8 7 b6 5 4 b3 2 1 <- Just the raised 7th both ways.

Edit: I'm starting with the natural minor scale of 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7

Mind you, in jazz for example, there's no difference in the ascending and descending pattern.
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt.
He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice.
