Well, I graduated Friday night and had "project graduation" Friday-Saturday. Those of us who don't know what that is, it's to prevent high school deaths. Instead of letting us throw a party byob or keg party or whatever, the high school takes you straight from graduation into this athletic resort and you're locked up with the hwole grade playing games the whole time basically. Really fun. I was hypnotized and believe you me, I play a friggen awesome air guitar.

But anyways...

at project graduation, they had raffles. They didn't cost anything - everybody got 5 tickets and some people just won.

I won an $800 limited edition ovation acoustic guitar cutaway.
But that's not bass related, you say?

well, I come home and get $450 as some graduation presents from Mom & Dad and from a friend of the familys.

I spend $50 on CDs and Burger King, but, that's not what makes it lucky.

Lucky is going on to talkbass.com for the first time since I've been a mod, and seeing an Ampeg 8x10 in Alabama for $450 and being really pissed. Cause its local pickup only and I got that cash!

and replying upset

and about 7 threads below it is Jewett City Connecticut. $99. Ampeg 8x10.

It only has 5 speakers. It will cost a little to refurbish it I'm certain. It will take $20 in gas.

But this weekend I got an $800 guitar and an 8x10 for $99, and a high school diploma and a lifetime's worth of memories with friends.

Just felt like... making a thread about it.

DAMNNN YOU!!!! i wish i had luck like that, the only thing i've won was a beating, not a good thing
#3
Good game dude.

Load that 810 up with some Neo speakers... it sounds nice + makes the load a bit lighter.
haha
#4
Congrats with your diploma and the gear...

MetalUpTheAss: yes, Neo's will make it lighter... but in order to sound good, he'll have to put in speakers with the same specs like the originals because the cab is tuned for those speakers...

Thats great Dan, I'm half happy for you and half jealous! I wish our schools project grad gave away guitars....the most expensive thing I've ever seen anyone get was a DVD player.
#7
^Really? What do you like about them...I used to lust after them, but after playing several I just couldn't understand what the big deal was. I've been happy with my Epiphone AJ-18SCE for a long time now, and I think it sounds much better than any ovation of comparable price. Too bad I ahve to sell it, I'm going to miss having an acoustic guitar to practice slapping and popping on.
#8
Sounds awesome, congratulations. How much do you think you'll need to spend refurbishing, buying new speakers, etc. Whats its rated at watt-wise?

Well, if you played one with a shallow bowl, yes its going to suck, there is nowhere for the sound to be amplified and there's gonna be not depth. The deep-bowled ones are awesome though. The curved back projects the sound much like a satalite dish, and the graphite backs don't absorb anything, thus projecting more sound and making it brighter. I really like the necks too, they tend to be very narrow. Some of the new ones also use a 'multiple soundhole' system that uses a bunch or little holes up in the top left (or right, depending on which hand you use) that allow for less feeback, but still a decent amount of sound projection. A lot of people hate their really bright sound, but I think they are sonic and engineering masterpieces.
#11
That's not a bad deal, Dan. Any idea how much it's gonna cost to refurbish the cab?

yeah i figured, its just all i read in the beggining was "won ovation contest" naturally i thought it would be one of the lower end models, because you didnt describe it as some "huge state-wide" contest or w.e..

or maybe Canada's just cheap
#37
no, I thought that too. It was out of my friggen senior class. I have no idea how the money my senior class raised could afford 2 DVD players, 3 ipods, 2 400 watt 3-CD Sony stereosystems, and a $1000 guitar... when the raffle said "Ovation guitar", I assumed uber cheap and opened it up after winning and was like oh wow. Took it home, looked her up, and dayamn. lol
