Alright my current rig consists of a Squier Affinity Strat and a crappy used Crate amp that sounds like absolute ****.

I've saved up a little over $800, and my parents have agreed to help me out and give me around $200-300 for the new rig I'm getting.

I play pop-punk, punk, and ska. Bands I listen to include Green Day, Less Than Jake, The Ramones, Operation Ivy, Reel Big Fish, Sublime, Anti-Flag, Five Iron Frenzy, Rancid, NOFX, The Offspring, The Queers, Pinhead Gunpowder, Screeching Weasel, The Mr. T Experience, and a bunch of other bands in this genre.

The guitar I'm probably going to get is an Epiphone Les Paul Standard (Not the best guitar, but I like the humbucker pickups and can get one for only $380)

Now the problem is an amp...

I have generally been really unsuccesful with amps, and I've returned a bunch of them and never really found one I liked.

Right now I'm looking at a variety of halfstacks, such as the:

Marshall MG100HDFX/MG412 (Here ) For $600.

Crate GT1200H/G412 (Here ) For $500.

And lastly the Crate GLX1200H/G412 Here ) For $700.

I'm not sure if the combination of the amps and this guitar are going to get the right sound that I'm looking for, so I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions to help me out.

I appreciate it.

I just posted this in a different thread 2 minutes ago:

As stated above, Marshall is out of your budget. In order to get the marshall sound everyone is telling you to but the marshall for, you would more than likely need a tube marshall. The MG series, as stated above, is crap. I had one for a week and ended up returning it because of it's cheesy tone. Most of your tone will be dependent on the amp you have. With that being said, your money may need to build before you buy an amp. It would be better in the long run for you to buy a good amp instead of wasting money on a much cheaper amp and then spending more later on for the good one. I have 2 amps that I bought before I was able to afford my Marshall TSL head and JCM 900 cabs. I wish now that I would have put my money into the better Marshall before wasting my money on my smaller Line6 and Crate amps (both sucked compared to the tube Marshall).

For the guitar, I would suggest a Fender Strat. They are affordable, and darn good for the price (and tone you are looking for). But don't worry much about the guitar, worry about that amp.

Good luck!

you also prob dont need a halfstack...2x12's have a lot of power too ya know.

The epi should be pretty decent for what you need it for. but if youre so desperate for humbuckers, check out the Fender Fat Strat, double fat strat, and take a look at the godin detour or freeway.

good luck!

Other than halfstacks... what amps do you guys recommend me trying out???

Btw I dont trust the people at Guitar Center because one time they really tried to rip me off and tried to sell me an amp that was broken. It was literally broken..... and they told me I should still buy it and that it'd only cost around $50. I checked at my local music store how much it would have cost to fix the amp and they said around $150 at least.... So ya......

Don't get the epiphone les paul standard!! At 400 (20 dollars more), you can get the epiphone les paul standard plain-top. The difference lies in the body wood material. In the normal standard, you have a combo of alder/mahongy, while the standard plain-top has a pure mahogny body. The reason for why the plain-top is cheaper is its looks. Please, get the plain-top. If you're getting an epiphone in the first place, that is.

As for the amp, you need to try em out to find what YOU like, thats all that matters.

I reccomend you try out a fender hot rod deluxe though Its an affordable all-tube amp, at 600 dollars from musiciansfriend

Good luck

Hahaha what a coincidence... I was just looking around musicians friend... stumbled on the Plaintop... and decided I'd prolly buy that since it's the color I like.

Btw thanks for the help and I'll be sure to play around with a bunch of different amps. Can the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe handle medium-heavy distortion??? For some harder punk? If not it's not that big of a deal...

^Medium distortion, yeah, i think it handles pretty well. Not heavy though. I do think it'd manage punk very well though. I guess you'll just have to try it out and decide yourself

If you want something with good drive, and not so good cleans, the randall RG50TC might be worth checking out
