I'd say it depends on the style of guitar you want as well as the sound you want to get. What do you normally play?

well I dont think it matters but I Want a heavier sound, and either mahogany or alder POSSIBLY basswood and I dont want to spend over 500 on the guitar.

definitely get mahogany then and maybe basswood but the mahogany would be the heaviest, alder isnt that heavy sounding normally, you could get a super strat style guitar and then change the shape a little and route it out for diff pups and maybe a different bridge like a floyd rose

You could check ebay and see what you like I found an Epiphone SG body there at around $30.00, you could consider those if you like, in the end it's your opinion.

Then rather than buy a new P.O.S, buy a used guitar that you can refurbish. Given that the neck has no damage, you can customize almost everything else, and have a much better starting point.

check your local pawnshops for great deals (sometimes anyways) you might find a great body/neck there for a decent price with trashy pickups (you just have to haggle with the guys ~ pawnshop prices arent fixed the lower you can haggle them the better)
