What's the difference? I play hard rock and punk and some solos. WHich one is better for me? I'm talking about the EMGhz H4/H4A and the EMG 81/85.

Thanks in advance

hz are passive.....like most guitar pups, they dont require a battery, but they suck. Regular EMG's are active which mean they use a battery to power an internal preamp which increases string response and sustain. Those pups are made for Metal....get something else

the biggest difference between the 2 kinds is that the emg 81/85 will sound active, its hard to say it kind of because its in the name, but theyre more alive and active. but passives are still ok if you get the right kind of them. but its all your choice. and the clips on the net like the sound samples, you cant trust them because they dont say like what guitar, amp, and any additional stuff theyre using when recording.

Passive pick ups dont suck.......EMG passive pickups are less then great tho, if youre going to get emgs get active cause those kick ass. Amazing harmonic reponse and tone. (im refering to 81/85)

First of all, what do you mean by "Hard Rock"? Are you talking REAL hard rock, or MTV hard rock?

The same goes for punk. Are you playing real punk like The Clash, or more pop-punk stuff like Green Day?

Either way, EMG's aren't for you. They'll just be too hot for what you want to play. Especially if it's the latter for both choices.

I don't know a ton about pups other than EMGs (I was looking at buying a guitar with them, so I got tons of info on them), so I'll let a pro recommend a better set for you.

emg 81/85 would be better unless you're trying to sound bad

You should probably play the instrument first before you decide to change stuff on it .

maybe you should first see how you like the sounds threw your amp or if you use any effects and then see if you want to change it.

The passive EMGs sounds decent on a good tube amp but the active ones are the way to go, as they have that extra gain with it.

Not passives that 'suck' he's referring to the HZ's. They're wretched.

ALL EMG's suck.
not just the passives.

i hate how generic of a response they are to anyone who plays anything other than blues.

do some research, EMG's are defiantly not money wisely spent

I think EMG's on a gain channel on a high gain tube amp like a 5150 is awesome.

But yeah, 9 out of 10 times they are reccomended they are not a good choice.

EMG's don't suck at all. For metal and hard rock they work great.

I have to agree that the HZs are horrible. Two came stock in my Schecter Damien FR and I think they sound amazing, but the horrible sustain more than makes up (down?) for it. It really is bad, anything beyond the 18th fret is out in a second or two, and you can forget about bending or vibrato. I would really like to try active EMGs but I would also appreciate it if anyone who knows about pickups (I know nothing) could suggest me some nice metal pickups.

^^Seymour Duncan has some nice pickups. The Blackout's(active) are nice and the Distortion, JB and 59' are great as well.
